Children who have sex advice may be reported to police
Children who have sex advice may be reported to police
By Alexandra Frean, Social Affairs Correspondent

CHILDREN under 16 would be automatically reported to the police if they seek advice on contraception, pregnancy or abortion, under government proposals.

Family planning and health campaigners said yesterday that the plans, which would do away with a childs right to confidential sexual health advice, would be disastrous because they would deter many from seeking much-needed help.

Jan Barlow, chief executive of Brook, the sexual health charity, said it could lead to a massive increase in unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.

Abusive or coercive relationships would also be more likely to remain hidden if young people felt that there was no one they could trust to listen to them in confidence, she said.

1. I think you're right
The Department for Education and Skills is now consulting on whether new guidance should be issued requiring information on under-age sexual activity always to be referred to the police.

What does this have to do with 'education and skills', apart from Ruth Kelly's interfering nose, under the guidance of Opus Dei?

The advice is health (and the DfH want to keep it confidential); the excuse for looking at it is for tracing abuse of underage girls, so that's the Home Office; the DfES should have no stake in this.

2. Great - then they can put them in camps.
Just for their own good, you know. Keep themm out of trouble until they can send them to a faith school.

3. AAAARGH!
Does New Labour wake up every god damn morning just thinking of more ways to betray the Left? I've had enough. Official last straw. I'm voting Green or Lib Dem from now on.

4. Bingo!
They must, above all, never do anything which could lead to them being called Socialist in any way. Auntie Maggie wouldn't approve of that at all.
