Brison gives opponents flak
TENILLE BONOGUORE
From Tuesday's Globe and Mail
"TORONTO — Liberal leadership candidate Scott Brison has criticized some of his challengers for not supporting plans to prolong the Afghan mission, saying they should have sided with the government.
The Nova Scotia MP this month joined leadership front-runner Michael Ignatieff as the only other Liberal in favour of a Conservative government resolution extending the Afghan mission to 2009.
While calling the vote an irresponsible ploy to divide the House, Mr. Brison told The Globe and Mail's editorial board yesterday that his party colleagues should have risen above the politicking to address a higher issue.
"Two wrongs did not make a right. Those Liberal politicians who voted against
Harper simply because he did something wrong are just as culpable," Mr. Brison said.
"I don't think Liberals ought to be seeking to differentiate themselves on a mission that we actually started. We initiated the Afghan mission. We did it for the right reasons. Those reasons have not changed.
"In Afghanistan, a premature withdrawal or a shaking of the coalition there could lead to another Taliban-led Afghanistan. It would be undoubtedly a centre of international terrorism again."
