Four Cats Shot Dead In Sheboygan Area

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. -- Some hunters could be jumping the gun on a proposal to allow the hunting of feral cats in Wisconsin.

Early last week, authorities in the Sheboygan area found the bodies of four cats on a road near a cemetary. All had been shot.

Sheboygan Sheriff's Department Sgt. Doug Tuttle said the animals were likely killed by a .22-caliber gun. Authorities are looking for anyone involved in the shooting.

1. This absolutely enrages and terrifies me!

While the rest of the country is trying to crack down on animal cruelty, the fact this is even being brough up seriously as a solution is just outrageous. If ferral cats are a problem, put the money into animal control to trap, neuter, and humanely euthanize if need be. These bastards aren't worried about the "song birds," or having ferral cats suffer starvation. They damn well just want to go out and kill something-- sons of bitches!!!!!!!!!!! May they take their friggin guns and die a nasty death from a backfired bullet! (think I'm angry??? damned right!)

I am very certain that the one thing that might make ME KILL would be if someone were torturing or injuring with intent to kill a member of my family and that includes my beloved dogs (or cats if I had them). I just pray I never have to find out.... But, I know, that like most, I DO have it in me to protect those I love.

Don't anyone dare turn this into a anti-gun, anti-hunting cause. This is NOT the issue and anyone with half a brain, knows this.

3. Yeah but what shocks me is this is happening in Wisconsin. I would expect
something like this in Texas, Wyoming, Oklahoma but not Wisconsin.

5. Forty years ago when I started hunting in Wisconsin hunters shot
feral cats when they saw them. They just didn't talk about it.

6. Do you realise how many native birds feral cats kill each year?
Edited on Sun Apr-17-05 07:04 PM by scubadude
I remember the figure of 200 birds per year per cat. Many of these birds are native species barely hanging on.

Here is a link with some info no the cat's effect on wildlife:
http://www.owra.org/cateffect.htm

Here is a bit of it:

A four-year study in rural Wisconsin by Coleman and Temple confirmed the UK findings; 30 cats, radio-collared for various periods of time, led researchers to conclude that, in Wisconsin alone, cats may kill 19 million songbirds and some 140,000 game birds in a single year. The researchers focused on rural areas, where residents averaged more than 4 cats apiece, working out to a density of 57 cats/sq mile. In urban areas, however, cat populations can be more than 2,000 cats/sq mile. Temple, a professor of wildlife ecology at the University of Wisconsin, also stated that house cats are probably the principal predator of birds and small mammals in many areas of rural America. Using figures from Wisconsin and Illinois, he found that outdoor cats kill 47 million rabbits a year - more than human hunters kill with guns. Temple points out that cats may also be the chief threat to some bird populations, especially grassland birds (many of which are in decline already due to habitat loss.)

Edited to add info

7. Well scubadude
No matter how much since you make the so called animal loving crowd will be soon calling you a Drunk, Bastard, Killer, Hick, Redneck and every other demeaning name they can think of in defense of Feral cats.
And it's not only song birds they kill it's also baby rabbits baby pheasants baby turkeys and other types of small animals.

The statistics say ONE cat kills at least 1000 small animals in it's lifetime. It would seem to me that if you were and animal lover you would love all animals and not just cats or dogs.
It would also be better to put your money where your mouth is and start paying for the trapping and spaying and neutering of these feral cats and not just spew your hatred toward hunters.

21. How many
Edited on Mon Apr-18-05 11:16 AM by Goblinmonger
animal deaths are you responsible for in your lifetime? If it is too many, should we kill you? Any of them rabbits, pheasants, turkeys?

Don't you think that a vast majority of the 1000 "small animals" the feral cats kill would be rodents? There have to be other ways to solve this problem.

And btw, if you don't see the inherent flaw in the "don't you love all animals" argument, here it is. It is the cats (a non-human animal) that is resonsible for the killing of the other non-human animals. It is the intervention of the humans that people are concerned about since that killing is not for survival but for "sport."

17. huh?
The link takes me to Dane County Friends of Ferals, P.O. Box 14444, Madison, WI, 53708

The Solution: Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a humane and effective strategy to control the feral cat population, enhance the lives of feral cats, and decrease the number of hard-to-adopt cats in animal shelters. Feral cats are trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, tested for infectious diseases, ear-tipped for easy identification, and released into a suitable habitat. TNR is a proven method of population control. Methods that euthanize cats are ineffective, because cats left behind will continue to breed and move into the newly-opened habitat. This is called a "vacuum-effect."

Im sure you are a big contributor to the cause in Dane county. Or maybe you are out every day trapping Feral cats. Let us know how it goes.

20. Actually,
I've contributed both cats and money. I've trapped two feral cats here and put them into the program. Both were females, so they won't be adding kitties to the local population.

I've said it before, but it makes me sick to think that we create a terrible problem and then try to solve it by killing off animals. I think we have a higher responsibility than that.

16. i really don't care much for cats
though i do think this bill is stupid, because who wants to be known as the state that shoots cats?

but that guy temple's research has been thoroughly debunked; i don't have a link or anything, and my level of interest is such that i don't want to take the time to find one, just figured i'd chime in.

24. A billion
birds die each year from flying into windows.

Maybe we should legalize the shooting out of windows? We must protect the birdies.

Next on my list telephone/cable lines, traffic, Hawks and Tippi Hedren.

These people just want to legally feel good about what they do, normally they would just poison the cats but that takes time and they don't get the intense pleasure from seeing kitty die.

8. Whoever did this is in violation of the law.
As of right now, all cats - feral or domestic, are "protected." And Jim Doyle has said that this recommendation will not become law.

Find the jerks and prosecute to the highest extent possible.

Edited on Sun Apr-17-05 07:39 PM by roguevalley
Then they would do it. Shooting kittens with 22's is cowardly and likely to create an impression of the state that is unfortunate. They need to catch as many as they can. There really is no good solution to this neglect.

that it does not.

Shooting cats is today Illegal.

Not spaying cats today is not.

Thanks for playing...

do you mean cat owners? You are right I have seen extreme hatred in these cat threads against hunters. Just close your eyes to the facts and use name calling as a defense like most of them do. And oh yes don't forget they are all (rightwing) redneck drunks.
