County board to vote on prayer at meetings

Supervisor Sharon Hampson's had enough prayer at La Crosse County Board meetings. "This is a unit of government, not a Sunday school," Hampson said Thursday as she introduced a measure to eliminate the invocation that starts each meeting.

"Every month the invocation is right in my face," Hampson explained in an interview after the meeting. Her assigned seat is right in front of the speaker's lectern that briefly becomes a pulpit when local clergy and spiritual leaders open the board meeting with a prayer.

Maybe we should worry when our leaders are looking for Divine intervention to solve problems.

I've met her on several occasions. She's not the type to make a huge stink unless something is completely overboard. LaCrosse has had other separation issues go to court recently. I imagine she will get smeared for this even though she is in no way an outspoken advocate for separation issues.
