Packers fire Sherman after 4-12 finish
Updated: 11:15 a.m. ET Jan. 2, 2006

GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay Packers fired head coach Mike Sherman on Monday, a day after the team finished 4-12.

Packers general manager Ted Thompson gave Sherman a two-year contract extension in August. But as injuries and losses have mounted this season, Thompson has sidestepped questions about Sherman’s status.

In recent weeks, Thompson has said only that the performance of everyone in the organization, including his own, would be reviewed after the season.

1. Just saw the press conference
Wausau Channel 9 interrupted The Tournement of Roses Parade to cover the press conference. Gives you some idea about how big this news is in Wisconsin...

Now....does anybody have Steve Mariucchi's phone number?

4. LOL
I didn't see your reply when I wrote mine below but this job's a shoo in for Mariucci if he wants it. I just feel bad that it means some poor black coaches that are probably very qualified will be dragged in for the token interview.

11. It would be easier to sell snow to eskimos, Goblinmonger
than to unload that Neanderthal on Packer fans.

13. Yeah, but there are all kinds of reasons to hire him
1. he had a winning record
2. he can get you good superbowl seats
3. he now knows how to PARRTAYY
4. um, doggonit, he's a good coach and people like him

I, personally, cannot think of anyone I would like to see less coaching for the packers.

3. I'll take a wild guess...
but my prediction is that the Packers hire Steve Mariucci. The guy got stuck with stupid Matt Millen in Detroit and the organization is familiar with him, Favre sticks around if he's there because he keeps the same offense intact and Mariucci's a clean cut guy who can make Packer fans happy.

He won in SF he just was shafted with a crap team in Detroit that was based around a failed rookie QB and some horrible WR picks by Millen.

5. Sherman was a genuine nice guy
He deserved the head coach job, but unfortunately the Pack needs to answer for the dismal season regardless of how close the games were. At the end of the day, it's all about the numbers in the "W" column.

Sorry to see him go, but it is a business.

Mooch?

6. Goddammit!!!!
Let's just hope that Thompson is serious about that last statement:
"In recent weeks, Thompson has said only that the performance of everyone in the organization, including his own, would be reviewed after the season."

I really believe that the majority of Packers fans would have accepted letting Mike have another year. It wasn't his coaching that caused this terrible season. It was the dismantling of the offensive line - a decision made by Thompson, IIRC.

Well, they ain't gonna re-hire Mike.
I'll take Mooch any day.

7. I agree
I heard the comment "...including my own." and thought, Yeah, this guy should resign too.

It was a bone-headed year from the giddyup....Packers deserve better.

9. Thompson will become known
as the guy who ran Brett Favre out of Green Bay.He will become the most hated man in the history of WI unless he turns things around in one big hurry. He's got more gumption than me that's forsure!

16. Yup. He wrote his own letter of resignation with that move.
And I think he knows it, too.

Isn't Mike doing a press conference today?
