Here we go again. The Bush administration has appointed yet another political crony to an important government position. Harriet Miers, selected to replace Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court, comes to the highest court in the land without ever having served a single day as a judge. Surely there are other individuals - with legitimate credentials and conservative pedigrees - who are more worthy of this honor.

It's true that some Supreme Court justices, such as Earl Warren and Byron White, were nominated to the court without prior judicial experience. But both of these justices brought significant experience to the bench; White was a deputy attorney general, and Warren was the former governor of California. And both of these justices were appointed by presidents - Eisenhower and Kennedy, respectively - who put the best interest of the country ahead of partisan politics.

Miers is a lifelong corporate lawyer and political operative who brings the same degree of experience to the Supreme Court that Michael Brown brought to his position at the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The last incompetent crony cost us the city of New Orleans. What will we lose this time?
