Seattle police officer killed, search on for gunman

SEATTLE -- Officers from multiple law enforcement agencies have swarmed the city's Central District neighborhood after a Seattle police officer was shot to death late Saturday night.

Seattle Police officials offered no immediate comment, but officers at the scene said one of their fellow officers had been killed in the shooting.

The circumstances of the shooting were not known, but a man who lived nearby said he heard eight to ten shots fired, then another volley of about six shots.

The shooting occurred just after 10 p.m. near the intersection of 29th Avenue and East Yesler Way.

7. I'll never forget hearing about Steve Cox being shot a couple of years ago

This was a guy who gave up being a high-priced lawyer to try to do something more direct to serve the low-income community of White Center. I knew him in the context of discussing the annexation issue (Seattle? Burien? Neither?) It's worse if you know the cop, but this sounds pretty bad too.

8. Like the rest of our cop killers here - you can bet it's a perp with a list of felonies

some violent and possible already a kill on his record - that was let loose with a very shortened sentence because the prisons were too full. The problem is we don't have money to keep people in jail/prison, which has been a problem since Bush pulled much of the funding in 2001.
