Minchew Files for Run at Everett City Council

Local educator and activist will maintain focus on the human equation in economic development.

Everett, WA – Jackie Minchew, Lowell resident and respected community activist, has filed documents with the Public Disclosure Commission confirming his decision to seek a position on the Everett City Council.

The primary theme of his campaign will be “Preserving Our Community in a Time of Increased Growth.” A key element of that theme will be expanding access to affordable housing. In addition he will continue to speak out on municipal responsibility in the areas of energy vulnerability and climate change.

Minchew says that he will be running a campaign from the doorsteps of the citizens. A strong supporter of publicly financed campaigns, Minchew says that he will limit campaign contributions to individuals and will refuse monetary contributions from political, business, or union organizations. In addition, the contribution range for individuals will be limited to an amount between $5 and $100 per contributor in both the primary and general elections.

According to Minchew, “Candidates are typically financed by the people that they will represent. We have seen how that has worked in the past. I think the people are ready to heartheir own voice represented in City Hall.”

Minchew has not yet declared which position he will be filing for in June. There are four seats up for election this year. While position 7 will be an open seat with the retirement of longtime councilman Bob Overstreet, incumbents Brenda Stonecipher, Drew Nielsen, and Ron Gipson will each be defending their seats on the council. Harkening back to his call for a
districting plan for council representation during his 2005 campaign, Minchew says that, because all of the seats on the City Council are considered at large, “…the number I choose holds no apparent significance.

And, perhaps by not declaring a position before the June filing deadline, other council members who might otherwise feel unencumbered by a challenger may feel the need to campaign a bit more. This can’t be a bad thing for Democracy.”
