Judge Orders SL County to Pay Animal Rights Protesters

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A judge says Salt Lake County will have to pay some animal rights protesters for turning them away from Abravanel Hall last year.

Yesterday, the judge ruled the county can NOT require 30-day advance protest permits for small and spontaneous protests on the plaza of Abravanel Hall.

On two different occasions in December, a small group of members from the Utah Animal Rights Coalition (U-A-R-C) gathered at the plaza. They handed out pamphlets and showed a video to concertgoers leaving and going to Abravanel Hall. Both times the group was told they could not demonstrate because they did not have a protest permit.

The judge said the county's permit policy for the plaza was unconstitutional for such a small group. He said 30-day advance notice is too long and unreasonable. <snip>
