Austin: Saturday 8/29...Health Insurance Reform Now Event
Edited on Fri Aug-28-09 03:28 PM by Flying Dream Blues
Let's try to get a good turnout! Here's the email I got today:

With just days remaining before Congress returns to D.C. to tackle health insurance reform, we're organizing our biggest push yet to show local support for change -- our "Health Insurance Reform Now: Let's Get It Done!" events.

There are thousands of gatherings across the country, and the event this Saturday in Austin could be one of the best. I hope you can be there as we hear from local leaders -- including Rep. Lloyd Doggett -- and present the thousands of declarations of support for reform that we've been collecting in your area for months.

The media and Congress are closely watching every sign of opposition and support, and a huge turnout is the most powerful way to show them that lies and fear-mongering have not deterred the majority of voters. This is the time to stand up for reform.

Don't miss this critical event -- click here to RSVP today. Here are the details:

What: Health Insurance Reform Now Event

Where: First United Methodist Church
1201 Lavaca
Austin, TX 78701

When: Saturday, August 29th
3:00 p.m.

Special interests know how closely members of Congress are paying attention to public opinion, and they'll stop at nothing to gin up fear and distrust. But they can't match the power of thousands of people who know the truth, demanding that Congress enact real reform in 2009 -- and thanking those already working for reform for their efforts.

Every person who shows up to this event -- and each friend they bring -- makes an enormous statement about the depth of local passion for reform.

Please arrive as early as possible to the event -- join us in Austin:

Thanks,

Luke

P.S. -- Before the event, please print off a flyer to display and make sure that your support is visible.

At least an hour in advance. Inside capacity is 1,200.

Oh and the teabaggers are coming. Of course.

Burnt Orange Report
Please be there early if you can. We've received word that a group of Texas secessionists are planning to disrupt the rally. All the more reason for folks who support real health care reform get out there and show our strength in numbers

6. just came back from there...
About 70 (I counted) teabaggers with the typical signs were there. On the sane side: 1200 inside the Church a few hundred more down at the AFL/CIO Hall and 200 or so still on the street.

Health Care Reform supporters were well represented and teabaggers hugely outnumbered.

I'll be interested to hear how Doggett's event went inside. We got there about 2:50 and it was already full.

7. Me too - couldn't get in the church
Edited on Sat Aug-29-09 05:37 PM by sonias
Probably missed getting in by about 20 people. I was there at 1:30. 1,200 in the church 300 at AFL-CIO plus a third building the trial lawyers opened up across from the capitol. Another couple of hundred there too. Jam packed.

Great turnout for our side. :bounce::bounce::bounce:

The organizers had you fill out a ticket for admittance asking for name, address, phone number, e-mail, if you supported health care reform and if you wanted to volunteer to help.

Of course the Tea baggers weren't going to let anyone collect their names. Nut jobs that they are.

8. When I saw the line...
wrapping almost completely around the church, I figured it was nil chance of getting in. I thought the admittance tickets were a great idea. Let the paranoid teabaggers cry about not getting in anonymously.

I hope these turnouts help pass the public option.

Austin health care reform rally draws 2,000
Doggett pushes for inclusion of "public option" in federal health care legislation.

U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett got a rousing reception from about 2,000 supporters of health care reform at a forum in downtown Austin on Saturday afternoon.

The event, sponsored by the liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org, drew enough people to pack the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church near the Capitol as well as two other nearby spillover sites with people still left on the sidewalks.

Your presence indicates we are not going to back down," Doggett, D-Austin, said.

He urged the crowd to push for the inclusion of a new public health care option in the legislation. Support for that provision has wavered in recent weeks, and some lawmakers have suggested a nationwide health care cooperative as an alternative to the public option.

"Let's not be co-opted," Doggett said.

They are getting outnumbered more and more. It sounds like it was a successful event!
