Hank Gilbert says he will run for governor

By Jason Embry | Tuesday, August 25, 2009, 09:23 PM

Hank Gilbert told the Statesman’s Gardner Selby on Tuesday that he plans to seek the Democratic nomination for governor.

Gilbert, a cattle producer and businessman from Whitehouse, was the party’s nominee for agriculture commissioner in 2006. He lost that race to Republican Todd Staples, 55 percent to 42 percent. He is also active in efforts to fight toll roads.

"I just feel like we need that person at the top that has the experience of fighting in the (Legislature) and fighting to get things done for the people of Texas across this state, get people inspired to take a hard look," Gilbert told Selby.

:applause:

1. Who?
That was my reaction when I saw this this morning, and no doubt the reaction of many potential voters. I actually took the time look him up, because I'm a political junkie, but I doubt most voters will, so he's got a lot of work ahead of him as far as name ID, etc.

8. Unfortunately...

I don't think a rural candidate can be successful in this state anymore. The power has swung too far towards the urban areas.

4. I wasn't familiar with Hank Gilbert either.
I just watched this video from 2006 and I am very impressed! I want to find out more, but right now I'm feeling good about this guy. :)

6. Wonderful!

He's the type of governor this state needs, straight-talking, bold and smart. Things are looking up on this somewhat somber day. :)

A heckuva good guy worth working our tails off for. I believe he will return the favor for the benefit of the Great State of Texas.

Bye-bye Bill White, even though I like a number of things about you. My money can only support so many races.

I think I was confusing. I enjoy working for a candidate I believe in, and I just can't do two. I'd rather work for Hank.

But it turns out, I am in the database and have the organizing page open right now. I sent them an email to let them know they've got a problem with their code. :hi:

I just received an email from the campaign, letting me know they got my message about the error and they're working on fixing it! Less than 15 minutes after I sent them my message about the error. SWEET!

22. Only thing is...
We know how this whole push for term limits blew up in everyone's faces. I think Gilbert should ditch talk of term limits in Texas.

so, I guess he's going to be the guy who will get my time and contributions (unless Chris Bell decides to make another run).
