Tiny Texas town head to Vegas for vacation
By ANGELA K. BROWN
Associated Press Writer

FORT WORTH, Texas The tiny town of Cranfills Gap really needs a vacation.

At least that's the opinion of Las Vegas tourism officials, who've decided to fly nearly half of the 350 residents to the desert playground as part of a five-day getaway and publicity stunt.

Up to 120 people those who could get off work and were over age 21 will fly in one jet to Sin City next weekend and stay in swanky hotels, eat at fancy restaurants and see glitzy shows all for free. The catch: They'll be followed the entire time by video cameras for tourism commercials to air early next year.

They won't get any spending money if they want to gamble or shop during their few hours of free time each day. But for many in the town with only two stop signs and no traffic lights about 75 miles southwest of Fort Worth, it's a perfect pre-holiday getaway.

"It couldn't have come at a better time," said Tanya Davidson, 33, who plans to marry her fiance in a drive-through wedding chapel there. "We had decided to get married at the end of the year or early next year, and when we heard about this trip, we said, 'Let's do it there.' "

Lucky bastards!

1. Very nice deal.
Who needs to gamble in Vegas? They got some great shows out there. Hope they have a good time and don't lose much money!

3. Don't you live close enough to move there temporarily
Maybe you can be adopted by someone in Cranfills Gap, Texas and go to Vegas with them.

I feel like this is going to turn into another indy movie like Dancer, Texas Pop 81. Or Tuna Does Vegas might ad lib something on that little upstart town competing with their play.

Yep - it's on already :

From Cen-Tex to Sin City, Cranfills Gap residents treated to trip to Las Vegas
(snip)
The production crew has spent the last month getting to know the town and this week is filming Cranfills Gap folks in their everyday settings before they jet off to Vegas on Dec. 13. Out of about 350 residents, more than 100 will end up taking the trip. Though its a good chunk of the town, Witte says the Gap will be all right while theyre gone.

Cranfills Gap is a small community right in the heart of Texas. Full of Norwegian heritage and a sense of community pride, Cranfills Gap is a great place to live, work, attend school and worship! With a population of approximately 350, everyone feels welcome and at home. "The Gap", as it is called by the locals, has something to offer to everyone!

I love this Texas Gap already!

4. Horny Toad Bar and Grill, Cranfills Gap, TX
Filming for a commercial

Residents seem to be getting used to cameras on the street and in businesses. The local lunch crowd Thursday at the Horny Toad Bar and Grill, in ball caps and jackets, eased onto barstools. The former gas station and feed store smelled of brisket the days special and was warmed by a wood stove.

The mood was subdued, the patrons focusing on their sandwiches, paying no attention to the large microphone hanging over their heads. The film crew from Synthetic Pictures trained its camera on the average lunch day, getting local flavor for the videos that will eventually air on the Vegas visitors bureau Web site and on commercials.

The Horny Toad, the only watering hole in town, will close up shop while the owners make the Vegas vacation a family affair. Misti Glass, 33, owns the establishment with her husband and her mom and dad. The bar and grill has been open for two years and is doing well. The family has put their all into the establishment, but its by no means their only job. Misti and her husband have a real estate company, and her husband also works for a glass company.

Ah, it doesn't get more small town Texas than this.
