storm check in
How is everyone? I am at WHD's. We have power and all is well! My neighbor from across the street called me and said that the house in Texas City looks fine! No trees crashed down on it!!! :woohoo: and believe it or not, I still have power there too!!!!

1. Greetings!

I (knock on all kinds of wood) have power too. Came back just a little bit ago. Peeking out the door, it seems my apartment complex has power, but other buildings and houses around, that I can see, do not. I'm in the Montrose district.

Didn't sleep much. The kitteh wouldn't let me. Kept demanding I MAKE THAT NOISE STOP. :-) Hard to sleep with a cat wrapped around your head.

Not gonna venture out there, but I think we made it.

3. Glad kitteh's okay.
You too, of course. :)

Hubby, kitteh, and I took refuge in a closet a couple months ago when a tornado got too close and that cat was not happy. We had her in a soft-sided carrier with webbing and she was really pushing at it and meowing. If we hadn't been wedged so tightly in the closet, she would have rolled herself across the floor. And if she weren't declawed (we didn't do it--we adopted her), I think she might have destroyed the carrier. Poor kitteh.

5. I'm glad you're all ok. Not one fucking DROP of rain here in Austin.
Nothing like being a foot below normal while two hurricanes and a tropical storm hit other parts of the state.

Weatherbug says gusts up to 33 mph out of the NNW out here in Dripping Springs. I have clothes out on the line and they're blowing horizontal! :)

11. babylonsister has checked in!
She just called me. All is ok at her house. Part of her fence fell down & some trees were lost, but other than that, they are okay. Some of her neighbors didn't fare so well, & parts of their roofs are in her yard. :woohoo:

I'm glad it looks like everyone is safe. We have major property damage but the loss of human life looks to be very low. We were very lucky.

16. Hey everyone...

Here in the DFW area, things are cloudy, rainy, and windy. The cooler weather is actually pretty nice. Nothing major but flooding from the rain could be a problem later.

Friends in East Texas are reporting power outages but nothing major.

I also have friends who are on a cruise ship that was due back into Galveston tomorrow but now they are delayed until Monday. Supposedly there are thousands of guests who drove to the port in Galveston that might not have a car when the get back. There is also a chance that the ship might end up having to dock in another state elsewhere if the port isn't opened by then.

It's good to hear that all are safe. :hi:

21. I've left from Galveston port before
that would suck if their cars aren't there, but hopefully they all have insurance. If the ship has to dock somewhere else, the cruiseline will get them home. :)

17. Hey
It is good to see that y'all came out of this pretty well. I'm in Huntsville so I was kind of out of the range of the worst of this, but the winds and rain were pretty heavy through the night and morning. I lost my Internet connection about 3 AM and power went out around 7 AM when I finally fell asleep. I woke up in the early afternoon and the power looks to still be down around most of town. (I'm up in the grad assistant's office on campus, which seems to be one of the few places in town with power right now.) A tree cracked at a house behind my apartment complex and fell over the fence into the parking lot, and there are a number of branches lying around but nothing too major. Near where I am on campus I saw part of another tree down and what looks like the library's book deposit, but may actually be something off of a roof. The winds are still decent; I saw a couple of girls trying to fly kites! So nothing too big here, but I wasn't expecting all that much. Still more worried about my hometown of Orange where it sounds like the flooding got pretty bad in some places.

25. Good to hear
I've been through that power loss thing for days and it sucks. In this Texas heat it can be a killer too. I'm glad you have your power back on.

I hope all Texans without their power get it back soon. Two to three weeks for some of them is what I hear. That is so sad. You're essentially homeless in Texas if you can't stand the heat in your house in the summer.

Take care

Sonia

26. Glad so many of our DU friends made it thru. Power outages stink
Edited on Mon Sep-15-08 12:12 PM by Melissa G
But at least most of our friends homes are OK.

We have a cousin in Galveston who is texting us. No phone contact yet. Roof damage and damage to her stuff in her storage shed but otherwise OK since her house was built up very high.
She's a city official so she stayed on the Island in a tall hotel. I'm sure she will have many tales to tell next we see her.

29. Just got my power back! (Sugar Land)
:woohoo:

I'm off to the grocery store to replace all the food I threw out this morning.

Some damage to house, but I've talked to the insurance company and hope to have someone out to inspect this week. My neighborhood looks pretty beat up and I've never heard so many sirens before, but all is well.

30. We just got power back,
after losing it about midnight Friday. No windows broken, no shingles off. A few medium-sized branches down, nothing we can't handle ourselves. Weather very pleasant during the period of time we had no power. Some restaurants, even a movie theatre/grill open since Sunday. All in all, it could have been a lot worse.

31. Okay and running a generator
We have a little power and I got a hot shower finally. That was just the best.

We got a hole in the roof from a branch, but it didn't go through the ceiling. One of our gates got messed up, but that is now put back right. I lost a lot of food, but fed my chickens well. :)

I was on my way to work this morning (first day back) and saw an ancient old oak snapped in two in the middle of a six-foot diameter trunk. It just broke my heart.

Alive and well and things could be a lot worse.

32. Hey, brought my laptop to work today. No power at home North of
FM 1960, earliest maybe Monday 9/22. Office on Beltway never lost power, so we were back to work 1/2 day Tuesday. Trees finally cut up and cleared from yard yesterday. Relative loaned us a generator, but I just run it enough for light at night and to keep refrigerator cold. Pic of nest where car was completely covered, but saved by fence and crepe myrtle trees on one side and breezeway on the other. Not a scratch on the car. Another tree fell behind car on the driveway. Our street was a mess, but family and furry friends all good.
