Poll: GOP Senator Barely Edging Challenger -- In Texas
By Eric Kleefeld - May 5, 2008, 8:28AM

In a sign that the Senate Republicans could be in danger in even states usually deemed safe for them, a new Rasmussen poll of Texas finds that Sen. John Cornyn (R) could very well have a race on his hands against Democrat Rick Noriega, a state Representative and Iraq War veteran:

Cornyn (R) 47%
Noriega (D) 43%

Sample size: 500 likely voters.
Margin of error: ±4%

Noriega will have his work cut out for him, though -- the latest FEC reports show Noriega with only about $300,000 cash on hand, compared to the incumbent's $8.6 million cash on hand.

4. Enough money has been bled out of Texas
Both Obama and Hillary have millions and are spending ridiculous amounts of money. It's beyond time for us to look homeward.

Whoever the Democratic nominee is, they will have money coming at them from every quarter. Meanwhile, the party will ignore Texas candidates. It's time to come home, Texas Democrats. Support our candidates.

Believe me, having Rick Noriega in the U.S. Senate will do our new Democratic president more good than our money. Since last June, every dime I have earmarked for political candidates has been and will continue going to Rick. It's not a lot, but it will do a lot more for his campaign than it ever could matter in the huge stash the presidential candidates have.

10. To Speak Of The Last Party Chairman...
I'm feeling a lot more hopeful about Democratic prospects than I have in years. Part of that might be due to the pleasant illusions I may be having about Howard Dean. I like to think that more party money is flowing from national into the Texas races.

I certainly didn't feel that way about his predecessor. I felt abandoned by the national Democratic party and each election after 1992 was one bitter disappointment followed by another. Before Howard Dean came on board, it looked like when the fundraisers came by, they were perfectly happy to take money from Texas Democrats, but come the autumn campaign season, we were left twisting in the breeze without a cent from National.

We Texas Democrats may not have a clean sweep this year, but I think it's at least possible that Texas Democrats will win at least one statewide race.

3. Get out the checkbooks people. If Rick can get this close being
outspent 6:1 he deserves your help. Lord knows the DSCC isn't sending anything to Texas (the bastards). We're on our own down here.

Anybody want to match my $100? Anybody else want to contribute at least one day's wages?

8. Noriega in striking distance of Cornyn, poll says
AAS 5/5/08
Noriega in striking distance of Cornyn, poll says

By W. Gardner Selby | Monday, May 5, 2008, 10:49 AM

A Rasmussen poll of Texas households — could be likely voters answering the automated telephone calls or rapscallions just causing trouble — shows state Rep. Rick Noriega, D-Houston, in striking distance of U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas. The outfit also divines a close fall presidential race in Texas.

Cut to the available Senate overview with a question on Gov. Rick Perry’s performance here. Or peek at the presidential poll—suggesting Sen. John McCain leads Sen. Hillary Clinton by 6 percentage points and Sen. Barack Obama by 5 — here.

Tony Gray, spokesman for Noriega’s campaign, said Monday: “It’s certainly good news and it’s reflective of what we’ve been finding in a handful of focus groups around the state. “Take Cornyn’s lack of strong name identification on top of the negative associations with the president, and Noriega also getting traction,” Gray said, adding that another factor could be excitement among Texans in the Democratic presidential candidates.

"It’s a dangerous time for incumbents," Gray said.

I love that line - "It’s a dangerous time for incumbents"

9. For Republican Lurkers Who Remember TR, Nixon, and the EPA
Edited on Thu May-08-08 08:49 AM by VogonGlory
For Republican lurkers visiting DU and this thread who still remember with pride Theodore Roosevelt's record at establishing national parks and national forests and Richard Nixon establishing the EPA, just remember that the current junior senator from Texas was given a zero --0-- rating by the League of Conservation Voters.

Whatever the record that your former state's Republican Party may have had on environmental issues, the predominant ethic in the Texas GOP seems to be "chop it down, dig it up, pump it out, dump the waste products afterwards, and hang the consequences" and those who question the wisdom of such an ethos are excorciated as "wil-eyed tree-hugging greenies" and "radical-liberal socialists."
