DELAY TO WITHDRAW!

DeLay plans to withdraw as candidate on Texas ballot

By DAVID ESPO
Associated Press
WASHINGTON -- Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay intends to withdraw as a candidate for Congress, a Republican strategist said today, a step that would allow the party to field a write-in candidate in hopes of holding his seat.
The development came one day after Texas Republicans lost a court battle in their bid to replace DeLay on the November ballot.
The strategist described DeLay's intentions on condition of anonymity, saying the former majority leader intended to make his own announcement.
DeLay, buffeted by scandal, resigned his Houston-area seat in June and said he was switching his legal residence to Virginia. He had already won a primary in Texas, and Republican officials there moved to name a replacement candidate.
Democrats went to court to block the switch, and prevailed.
The maneuvering underscored the battle between the two national parties as they vie for control of Congress in the midterm elections.
DeLay had held the House seat for more than two decades, but stepped down - first surrendering his post as majority leader, then resigning - at the urging of party leaders who said he risked defeat this fall.

1. The skunk knows he can't win
:bounce: :woohoo: :applause:
Lampson's a shoo-in!!*
That means we only need to capture 14 House seats!!:headbang:

*assuming it's not likely a write-in candidate can win.

5. Feel free to pass out these write-in candidate papers to every nitwit you
know in the district: http://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/forms/a2-8.pdf.

If the Republicans want a write in campaign, there may as well be a 100 of them to dilute the not-Nick Lampson vote.

8. Oh come on cat_girl we don't have to wait
Do you know how hard it is to win as a write in candidate? Especially on these new computer e-voting systems. You have to spell the name out on the box. We know that on the Hart Intercivic eSlate machines it's really hard.

10. Statement from TDP party chair Boyd Ritchie
"Regardless of his excuses, Tom DeLay is abandoning his party and his state with his cut-and-run strategy. DeLay orchestrated this whole ballot scam because he knew he was fighting an uphill battle running against Nick Lampson, a strong candidate who appeals to Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike. Nick Lampson is, without question, the best candidate to represent Congressional District 22 in the House of Representatives. We are pleased that DeLay’s quest to circumvent voters and the electoral process has finally come to a close, and we look forward to a fair and ethical election."

I love how "cut and run" is being thrown right back at them. That's gotta sting. Kudos to Boyd and the Texas Democratic party for taking the case and making it stick!
:applause:

11. Am I missing something here?
Tom DeLay and the Texas Republican Party are getting what they always wanted - a replacement for DeLay. This does not sound like a time for celebration.

13. No, they can't replace him
When a candidate withdraws, he can't be replaced. When a candidate is declared ineligible, then he can be replaced. So, that's why Tom tried to pull the ineligibility scam.

The Republicans have no choice but to get behind Smithers (a Libertarian) or get coordinated behind a write-in candidate. And, believe me, I am laughing out loud over that last suggestion! I've been to their candidate forums over the last few months and the last thing they are is united, organized or of one mind. About anything.

15. And then there were 4 rec's.....
We had a run-off in my county because of write-in votes. Too many people wrote in "Mickey Mouse" so neither real candidate got 50% + 1.
