Comments anyone? I must confess that I have always found San Antonio unfathomable.

1. I think Castro rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.
He's young, though. I think he has a future. But, he might be one of those guys that is more popular outside his hometown than inside.

2. Hardberger Is A FUCKING ASSHOLE!!!!!
that is the son-of-a-bitch who caused Christie Littleton's medical malpractice lawsuit, and her seven-year marriage to Jonathan Littleton be cast aside...claiming that the couple was involved in an illegal same-sex marriage, because Christie was a post-op male-to-female transsexual, and, in Hardberger's eyes, Christie was simply "a man with a vagina."

FUCK Hardberger, may that rotten son of a bitch rot forever in the deepest pits of HELL!!!

I was SO GLAD when the Wickses stuck it right to fucking Hardberger, and said, "ok, asshole, then try and stop US from getting married" and had, by all appearances, a lesbian wedding of two females...except that one was a post-op transsexual.

FUCK YOU, HARDBERGER!!

I have not forgotten, and I never will!! I have not forgiven, and I never will!

6. I never heard that about Hardberger. I'm disappointed. In his years
as a judge, he did much good for many people. That doesn't make up for the kind of bigotry you describe, but I hope it puts in some context.

7. Well, Now You Have.
He was on a three-judge panel that heard the case for the 4th circuit, back in 1999. The case is "Littleton v. Prange"

He had the tie-breaking vote, and he went the wrong way with his vote. I will never forgive, and I will never forget.

As far as I am concerned, what he did to Christie, in effect...was to deny her the right to decide FOR HERSELF what her very identity was. and that means he denied her the right to define herself...which is, to my people, one of the most fundamental of all freedoms we seek - the right to define ourselves, and to not allow society, or any rule of law...define us, especially in a manner not pleasing to us.

Hardberger virtually de-humanized Christie. Let's face it folks, there are few, if any, things more fundamental to your very self-identity than your gender.

I will never forget, nor forgive, the fact that Hardberger, in effect, told us that we were not human, and had no right to define our own selves, nor to pursue happiness, wholeness, and completeness.

FUCK HARDBERGER!!

3. Hardberger winning is a good thing
My first experience with Hardberger was 25 years ago when he represented our neighborhood in fighting a stadium that the San Antonio ISD wanted to build right up the street from our neighborhood. He worked with us and we filed suit in federal court and won a permanent restraining order.

Hardberger long has been a very good friend of organized labor and labor worked hard to get him elected to the appeals court. He was good to labor there. Anyone with a soft spot in his heart for organized labor has his heart with working people in general. That's a good thing.

Mermaid, I understand your feelings and what happened is unfortunate. I think if you talked with Hardberger, he'd probably say he had no choice, as he saw it according to the law, to rule as he did. I do think if there was a way he could have ruled for the person you mention he would have as Hardberger has never demonstrated to me, or done anything I've seen, that would lead me to believe he harbored prejudices.

4. BULLSHIT!!!
Hardberger let a doctor who committed serious fucking malpractice off the hook on a technicality...trashed Christie's marriage and annulled seven years of a wonderful relationship that couple had had (and, yes, Jonathan knew, before he married Christie, that she was TS)

More to the point, Hardberger denied Christie her very IDENTITY. He denied he the right to define herself FOR herself...and reduced her to "a man with a vagina."

No, fuck him...I don't care how much good he has done, as far as I am concerned,, that one action, in the Littleton vs. Prange case usdoes ANY good or worthwhile thing Hardberger ever did!

I am personal friends with Christie Lee Littleton, and you never saw what a broken heart this man, Hardberger, caused dear Christie.

She lost her jusband, whom she loved dearly...she lost her ability to any form of compensation for that loss...she lost any claims on joint property the couple had accumulated thru the marriage, and she had her very core IDENTITY...and privacy about that...completely RIPPED AWAY from her.

No, Hardberger is a fucking soulless zombie, who never had to see the real emotional dmage his ruling from the 4th Circuit caused!

5. Yeah, San Antonio is unfathomable.
I think the election demonstrated the errant nature of term limits. It was like major league baseball in 1944. All the good ones were off the field, leaving the boys and old men to go at each other.

Beyond that, the combination of a high pandering requirement, city limits that go well into the suburbs, the Anglo-Latino power split, an unusual propensity for voters to bash the politicians they vote for, and the power of developers in combination with a Texan sheeple reflex of worshipping rich people make this a non-dull place to read the metro section.

It's not Chicago, but we're still proud that 8 of our 10 city councilmen finished their terms without going to prison for bribery.
