Is it true that there is no state income tax in Tennessee ?
Which jurisdictions, if any, pay local taxes (City / Township / Municipality / County) ?

1. Only if you have income from investments, then it's 6% (The Hall tax)

2. TN does not have a "regular" income tax, like most states.
We do have the Hall Tax. (link: http://www.tennessee.gov/ecd/bizserv_personal.htm)

We also have poor schools & a very high sales tax. Most counties the sales tax is 9.75% on non-food items & 8.75% on food. In the "resort areas" like Gatlinburg the sales tax can be as high as 11.5%.

3. Very poor schools, very poor services of any kind. If you don't need them, you're OK.

4. other than personal income taxes
Property taxes (where I live, city and county)

Business taxes make it hard on little businesses to operate legally - not just a lot of tax $ but also a lot of confusing, overlapping forms. CPAs make a nice living!

A state income tax would be the fairest tax for the middle and lower income brackets. Our sales tax is very high and the school systems are definitely lacking potential as you can read from other posters in the forum.

6. An income tax would help most of the people...
that were out protesting it a few years ago because right-wing radio got them all jazzed up. :( My parents would end up paying more in taxes if there was a state income tax but they're for it. I love Tennessee but there are so many things wrong about this state. :(
