John Morganelli and (possibly) Jim Eisenhower to run for PA Attorney General

Morganelli likely to run for state attorney general
Northampton County DA says Rendell urged him to campaign again.

By John L. Micek | Call Harrisburg Bureau
August 28, 2007

HARRISBURG - Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli said Monday that he's laying the groundwork for his third campaign for state attorney general, and expects to make an official announcement after Labor Day.

And, unlike past years, the veteran prosecutor says he expects to have Gov. Ed Rendell, a fellow Democrat, in his corner.

In a telephone interview, Morganelli, 51, of Bethlehem, said he had a one-on-one dinner meeting with Rendell on Aug. 9 in which the governor expressed support for a potential candidacy, and said he believed that a ''tough-on-crime'' local prosecutor such as Morganelli could give the Democrats their best chance of capturing the attorney general's office since it became an elected post in 1980.

''We sat down, and he told me he felt strongly that I should announce my candidacy soon,'' Morganelli said. ''He gave me suggestions to follow, which I did. I feel confident that he believes my profile is the strongest profile.''

From the Governor Casey and Senator Specter Files: Politicians who ran several times before being elected statewide…

Sources close to two-time attorney general candidate Jim Eisenhower told PoliticsPA.com that he’s seriously interested in running again. Eisenhower believes he can raise enough money to win, and would have the support of Governor Rendell. And while Chris Casey and John Morganelli could split the more conservative vote, Eisenhower would have a strong grassroots base of support in Southeast PA.

I called four different PA Attorney General hotlines to get help the other day. Every one was answered by a know-nothing. One woman went so far as to tell me she didn't know the law and "wasn't allowed" to tell me the section of PA law that applies to consumer fraud and nursing home abuse, or where to find it, even if she did know.

She said, "you have to hire a private attorney if you want to find out what the law is in Pennsylyvania. I'm not allowed to tell."

Some Attorney General !
