Whose Morals? What Values? Are you sick and tired of hearing neo-conservatives talk about moral values when our government is torturing detainees, pushing faith-based initiatives, denying rights to same-sex couples and generally undermining the Bill of Rights?

Join the ACLU of Oregon for a discussion on May 21, 2005 at 1:00 pm in the Smith Center at Portland State University about these and other issues at the Annual Membership Meeting. Come and find out how you can make a difference.

Civil Liberties and Moral Values Panel Discussion 1:00 – 3:00 pm Vanport Room #338

What role do values play in guiding a pluralistic society, and how should civil libertarians talk about them? Panelists and topics include:

Torture is Not an American Value, The Case Against Donald Rumsfeld
Cecillia Wang – Staff Attorney for National ACLU Immigrants Rights Projects, attorney in Ali et al., v. Rumsfeld

Why Speaking Frankly and Publicly About Torture Matters in a Democracy
Darius Rejali – Professor of Political Science and Carnegie Scholar, Reed College, expert on violence and torture in modern societies

Why the Faith-Based Initiative Will Hurt Clients and Religious Institutions (The Effects on Real People)
Ellen Lowe – Lobbyist for the Oregon Law Center and the Oregon Food Bank, Former Political Director, Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon

How Opponents of Same-Sex Marriage Are Harming Children and Families
Beth Allen – Attorney, Lane Powell, Portland; member Basic Rights Oregon

The panel will be moderated by David Fidanque, Executive Director, ACLU of Oregon.

3:00 pm Reception, Room #294

Please RSVP if you plan to attend the reception through www.aclu-or.org or by phone:(503) 227-3186 or (541) 345-6162.
