Mankiller urges native voters to vote against Coburn

TULSA (AP) -- The former chief of the Cherokee Nation urged Oklahoma American Indian voters not to vote for U.S. Senate candidate Tom Coburn, saying he was a threat to American Indian sovereignty.

Former chief Wilma Mankiller told the crowd of about 45 people at a luncheon at the National Press Club in Washington that the Muskogee doctor did not believe in the strength of tribal agreements.

''We have a dangerous situation in Oklahoma in a senatorial candidate, Tom Coburn, who said that tribal agreements are no longer relevant,'' she said.

''It's a job for all Native Americans. We need to make sure those people don't get elected.''

In August, Coburn made remarks questioning whether some Cherokees should be considered Indians.

1. Native American vote
I'd post the link, but we don't have an online subscription. Anyway, the NYT last week ran an article on the Native American vote. One, Native Americans, are registering and voting in numbers never seen before and two, in some states like Arizona and South Dakota, the Native American vote is likely to determine the outcome. The NYT noted that most Native Americans vote democratic, but that certain nations with ties to casinos split their votes.
