What general location is your studio? Before I got my own software, I used to use..Barrister, then Longbranch, and finally Lonnie at Greenwood. I finally left them all because it was too expensive.

Actually in Creek County between Tulsa and Sapulpa. About a mile South of Town West Shopping center.

I am just doing studio work part-time now. I have been working a full-time job in OKC for almost a year. Still living in Tulsa though.I am playing a few live gigs from time to time too.

Good morning....can't sleep, so I wake up and find a new forum on DU!

Question:
When I was doing the campaign database, and got to "MAJOR" media I had a hard time deciding on some of the small town newspapers.
Really, In Oklahoma there are only two "major" papers. I did add the Lawton Constitution, Norman Transcript, Stillwater News...can't think of the others right now. If you think I should add more there looks like more time to do it. Suggestions??

10. Here's a couple of small town newspapers
Duncan is the county seat of Stephens County and has a population of 25,000 (that's what I've been told, can't find any firm number for population). Duncan is 25 miles due east of Lawton but few people in Stephens County read the Lawton Constitution. Duncan is the home of Halliburton. There are numerous small towns served by the Duncan Banner...Waurika, Comanche, Velma, Marlow and Loco being a few of them.

http://www.cityofduncan.com/
Duncan Banner - published daily except for Saturdays.

http://www.duncanbanner.com/

Marlow, Ok is a small, rural town with a population of close to 5,000. Due North of Duncan 10 miles and is the town I live in.
Marlow Review - published weekly on Wednesday

27. Thanks
I think Marlow wouldn't qualify as major media. I might put in Duncan. There are lots of little towns in Oklahoma with population of 5,000 to 25,000 that have papers.

I am familiar with Duncan, btw. I have lived in Norman, Enid, Del City, Sayre, Moore, Poteau, Sulphur, and now Tulsa. I used to teach Oklahoma history in high school before I started my present career.

I think I'll add Muskogee, McAlester, Duncan, Ardmore, Enid, Durant, and maybe ELk City. That's enough. Doing that database is tedious.

but since I live there I thought I'd throw it out for you. Sounds like you have a good mix with the towns you've chosen to add.

Marlow is my first experience with Oklahoma. I moved here in June, 2001 from Dallas. Prior to this move I had always lived in Texas. I really enjoy living in Oklahoma.

I'm glad I could be of help. Good luck on the database.

36. Well I changed my mind again
I just decided to do only towns with 30,000 or more population. Even then you couldn't call anything but the World and the Oklahoman.."major media". Also, if the town is a suburb, I'm not going to do their paper.....like Broken Arrow. Everyone in BA reads the World anyway.

So here is the list
OKC
Tulsa
Norman
Lawton
*B.A.
*Edmond
* Midwest City
*Moore
Bartlesville
Enid
Muskogee
Stillwater

That's it.

Other than my wife and children, I think I'm one of three Democrats in the Edmond area. Very, very conservative here. In fact, one of our neighbors put a sign up in his yard a few weeks ago that says...Support President Bush and Our Troops.

Needless to say, Kerry will not do well here in Oklahoma, but hopefully we can put a few new Democrats in office in November. Here in Edmond, a friend of mine is running for state senator, not sure how much chance he has, however, I admire the fact he's throwing his hat in the ring.

15. Yard Signs
You should put up a sign that says, Support Our Troops, Elect Kerry.

I know OK has no real chance of going to Kerry, but I did find it interesting that several of the sites tracking the progress of the potential electoral college results have put Oklahoma in the "leaning" or "probably" column for Bush, rather than the "certain" or "safe."

There's only been one poll for OK, that I know of, on the Bush vs. Kerry question, and Bush was at 50%. Unfortunately, it was done prior to the primary here, and much the remaining 50% was split between Edwards and Kerry. If Edwards were to be on the ticket, it might give him a shot at at least making it competitive. The rural people, exception the NW, are pretty fed up with Bush. But, of course, Tulsa and OKC are the problem and have most of the votes.

It's much more fun to have on my bumper than my "Brad Carson for U.S. Senate" one...

Edited to add: And what about Wes Clark? Edwards and him were neck and neck right through the primary... wouldn't Clark have about the same chance?

This has been a great (and polarizing) election year thus far and a great time to be a Democrat in Oklahoma. I was lucky enough to meet both Senators Kerry and Edwards during the primary season. If we could only muster enough votes to send our electors to a Democratic Presidential candidate (for a change) instead of the Gaylord candidates.

But for the moment, make sure you put all the support you can behind Democratic candidates for Senate and the House. We actually have a chance at sending a Democrat to the Senate this year, and while he may not be an ideal Democrat, his party affiliation could affect leadership issues.

71. Yeah, well, call me defeatist
But I have yet to see an ad for Brad Carson. The BOOB tube seems to be dominated by ads for Humphreys (no, we don't need to "get to know each other") and Coburn (sorry Ron, my kids don't need to learn squat from you other than what a PIOUS JACKASS looks like). Carson needs to start getting his name out there if he wants votes in November.

Incidentally, whenever I vote in the primaries, there always seems to be a large roll of Democratic voters in EDMOND where I vote (Clegern Elementary School). Are these people actually voting in the general election, or are they selling their souls and voting, COUGH, COUGH, ACK, ACK, for REPUBLICANS????!!!!!!!!!!

72. Primaries...

Well, one reason you're not seeing ads for Humphreys and Coburn is that they are in a hotly contested primary at the moment. Carson is not facing the same kind of opposition in his primary and so does not need to run those ads right now.

If money were more abundant in Senate campaigns, I might argue Carson should go ahead and start the battle, but given the circumstances, I think he's better off letting Coburn and Humphreys go at each other and then tailor the ads he does produce toward the candidate he will actually oppose.

As for Democrats in the primaries, there are more registered Democrats in Oklahoma overall than Republicans, but the state tends to vote Republican in national elections. The reason for this is complicated, but mostly relates to the fact that Oklahoma Democrats tend to be very conservative. I generally call them Republicrats.

73. I don't care if he has a primary opponent or not
Edited on Mon Jun-28-04 03:23 PM by Sledge Hammer
He STILL needs to get his name out there. Hamp Baker had his name plastered all over the state WAY before he ever ran for an election back in the sixties (there are still some old car hoods on the Turner Turnpike stating "Hamp Baker Says Have A Nice Day"). There aren't really a whole lot of people outside of a few diehard Democrats who realize who Brad Carson is or for what office he is running. Name recognition is EVERYTHING.

As for the numbers of redgistered Democrats versus repugs, yes, I'm well aware that we outnumber the repugs something like 2 to 1. My statement was mostly a rhetorical comment on the generally LAME job our state Democratic party is doing (Mike Turpin and Pat Hall ought to be horsewhipped for the damage they've done). I think more than cross-party voting, there's been a lot of apathy in our house. I would guess that MAYBE less than a dozen Democrats turn out for the primaries in my precinct. The repugs, on the other hand, are very active on election day. To me, that's all completely UNACCEPTABLE.

However, I do think the recent campaigns in the February primaries were a good start at a remedy; Wes Clark and John Edwards were hitting places like McAlester, Durant, Poteau, etc. We've got to keep that momentum and keep the small fundraising going in order to win.

74. Well, his name is out there...
He's polling statistically even with either Humphreys or Coburn as the potential opponent. And, I do see signs and bumper stickers for him.

The point I was trying to make is that you're going to see more of it from Humphreys and Coburn no matter what until the primary is over. Carson can't and shouldn't try to compete with that, else he'd run himself into a financial hole.

For the record, Carson does have opponents, and I like two of them more than Carson, but they don't really have a chance in the statewide primary.

Ask the average person who's running for senate and they'll immediately answer Humphreys and Coburn. Those two will beat the drums all of the way up to the primary (and maybe runoff) and will gain tremendous name recognition going into the general election. That's MY point. It's that kind of strategy that'll keep Brad Carson from getting elected.

76. Well then...
What are you doing to get Carson's name out there? Contact his campaign and volunteer to put out some signs or ask to speak to a representative about your concerns and work over what you think can be done. They will talk to you and work with you. I've had a rep from their campaign call me twice now in answer to questions about Carson's positions and strategy. They are quite helpful and friendly, and most of all, informative.

If nothing else, start writing letters to the editor, weekly, letting Oklahomans know why we should vote for Carson.

I understand your concerns, but this negative approach to Democratic politics is one thing that keeps us in the stone age here in the Great American Desert. (Yes, I know ... I'm being ironic.) Carson has been on a 77 county tour of Oklahoma, meeting people in person, talking to people directly. Humphreys and especially Coburn are pretty much sitting around and relying on the sound bites.

And once again I will note that in the last poll, support for either Carson or the eventual Republican candidate is about even. In this state, at this point in the campaign for a Senate seat, that's fairly amazing. You mentioned Edmond. Are you relying on what you see and hear around there for your view? If so, I think it may be distorted. Republican volunteers are thick as fleas up there.

Edited on Mon Jun-28-04 08:09 PM by Sledge Hammer
Sorry, that stands about a snowball's chance in hell of happening. I do not rely on what I see or hear for squat in Edmond, but I DO know how the campaign will play out based on every other campaign in the past.

And I don't see how Carson will hurt himself by campaigning early in the game. Cable ads and signs are CHEAP. It's ALL about name recognition. The only negative approach has been our bonehead state party. Zero support for their candidates and even attacking them (with friends like that, who needs enemies?).

Talking tours were great for politicians when Harry Truman ran for president, but they don't do squat today. You're counting on a voter to get interested enough to come out and visit with the candidate. Humphreys and Coburn are hitting people in their homes while they're watching their favorite programs and to and from work with yard signs and billboards. I've seen maybe two or three Carson stickers and ZERO signs.

78. Our Bonehead State Party
That should be trademarked, and you'll get no argument out of me on that point. :-)

However, again, if this really concerns you, take a more positive approach. Defeatism tends to be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

For the record, the Oklahoman has printed several pro-Carson letters recently. (The current management, while still leaning heavily to the right wing, isn't quite so openly biased in its editorial policy as it was when Gaylord ran things directly. They will at least print opposing editorial views.) I don't know how many because I don't read it every day. (I refuse to pay for it and just read it when I'm in a place that has it out for customers in the mornings.) Hell, they've printed a couple letters I've written, and by Oklahoma standards, I'm a radical nutjob. There's also the Tulsa World, and you could write to countless other state newspapers. You could volunteer to get on the phones or place signs. None of this gets done without volunteers.

And, one last time, Carson has been campaigning. Neither of the Republican candidates has embarked on a statewide tour.

I've said my piece. If you're that committed that we'll lose, you're probably right.

If my schedule permits it, I'll gladly make telephone calls on his behalf, and I'll definitely put up signs in my yard and anyone else's yard who'll let me.

But I do think it would be a lot of fun to get a bunch of us together somewhere.

Anyone listen the KOMA Friday song "Oklahoma"? I LOVE it! Would love to get a copy of it to put on a CD!

I've lived almost half my life there, in Tulsa, Enid, Altus, Cleveland and Stillwater. My parents, and brother and sister were all born there and live there now. I met my husband in Stillwater and married him in Sand Springs, and I had my first daughter in Stillwater.

I'll be in Tulsa this summer for the first time in over two years, and I am really looking forward to it.

On edit: I sent an email begging the Tulsa Democratic Club to send a postcard to my mom inviting her to a meeting. She is a good Democrat who is lonely and politically frustrated. She never got an invitation, though. Does anyone know of any Tulsa Democratic clubs that are interested in new members?

I was born in Stillwater and lived most of my life in Edmond until moving to Missouri in '87. Went to UCO for a couple of years.

My daughter asked me about the Royals yesterday and I said, "naw, I like the Rangers better," and she said, "But, you're from Missouri."

The poor child, she knew as soon as she saw my face she'd stepped in it, but good. I am NOT from Missouri, and if I live in Missouri until I'm 300 years old, I will NEVER be from Missouri.

I am an Okie, and always will be!

It wasn't really that stern a look, I'm not going to let a question about an AMERICAN LEAGUE team get me mad at my dear daughter, it's just minor league baseball, anyway.

Born in Texas (thank God) and raised in Okla. (wha? what did I do?).

Grew up in one of those little racist farm towns in Southwestern OK. Pop 500 (2500 if you count all the cattle). As soon as I was 18, I high-tailed it outa there!

I must confess that I am not happy here, never have been, and prolly never will be! Hope to permanently re-locate to the East coast as soon as I get all my little duckies in order!

Anyway, I'm here for now and happy to do my part for the Kerry campaign.

It is conservative, but not as conservative as I recall Oklahoma. Working like fiends to get out the vote. Last election B* took NC by 13 points, now depending on which poll Kerry/Edwards is within 3-5%. You know how it is...you're used to sweatin' if you're from Oklahoma. 122. Another Okie
Joined DU recently, just got registered in Tulsa Co. a couple weeks ago, just picked up my Kerry-Edwards-Carson yard signage yesterday!

On a sad note... Looking for permanent work! Anyone have any good IT leads (any level)? Technical stuff? Marketing/graphics? Writing?

Also, selling 2 extra comedy tickets for a show in OKC: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=173x870

-------------------------------------
Anyway, happy to be here! DU has kept me sane throughout the campaigns! :silly:

Had a message that I really should send via a PM, but you can't receive them yet.

I'll just summarize and say you could see if COX is hiring in Tulsa. Go to their website to look. All applications are taken online.

132. Thanks for suggestion
Thanks, Roy.
I went by there yesterday, and they directed me to their website. Don't even take resumes at HQ, it's all online now. But they are moving to a new location within 2 weeks, and the woman I spoke to thought they'd be hiring soon thereafter; but right this minute, not a whole lot.
I'll keep an eye on them! :)

133. Not a problem ...

Just keep checking the website. It updates fairly often, and with Tulsa in the process of launching phone service, they'll definitely be expanding their need for techs. Good ground floor opportunity.

As for the online application process, that kills two birds with one stone. It results in a mssive reduction of paperwork, and it ensures the people who do apply know how to use a computer.

146. More Than we Know
There are more Progressives in this state than we know. We just can't get together because there's no info. I'm new to DU (I lurked all last year), but I've decided to get involved to take back my party and then my country! I went to my precinct meeting and now I'm a District and State delegate! :wow:

We've got a long, long way to go, but there really are a lot of good people in this state. If we can quit the intra-party bickering and ego-fests that I'm seeing, we can all make a difference!
