WaPo re Joy Padgett
www.washingtonpost.com

GRANVILLE, Ohio, Sept. 26 -- Joy Padgett, the GOP's new congressional candidate in Ohio, has been in a jam when it comes to finding a big-name Republican who could come to town and bring more than trouble.

(snip)
This helps explains Padgett's excitement Tuesday as her lunchtime guest of honor took to the podium outside the historic Granville Inn. It was first lady Laura Bush. The president's approval ratings may be in the drain, but the first lady still regularly scores in the high sixties. She was in town to raise money for Padgett, and to offer the candidate at least a one-day respite from the troubles that her radioactive party affiliation is causing in Ohio's 18th District.

(snip)
Space, a 45-year-old lawyer, said the Ohio Republican party and the Iraq war have softened many "nevers" into "maybes." His strategy is to link the GOP hopeful with the GOP congressman so that voters will see "Padgett" on the ballot and think "Ney."

(snip)
And, though Padgett rarely mentions Ney by name, Space is convinced that her ties to the legislator will complicate her campaign. Space said that Ney "anointed" Padgett as his replacement. She has said that is not true -- but she has to deny it over and over, underscoring the predicament of Republicans in a year when bad breaks outnumber good by a wide margin.

The 18th is geographicly on of the largest, if not the largest, districts in Ohio. Bankrupt Joy couldn't even find a place inside the district to hold her love fest. Granville is outside the district near the home of Bob ( "casual" and "not social" friend ) Ney.

6. cmd posted this first on the GD board
Sorry cmd, wasn't thinking about "credit", saw this getting lost on the national GD board and stuck it over here so Ohio folks could see it. State specific topics usually get ignored (unless they're about macaca) over there. Good find, thanks for posting it first!

2. There were 2 DUers protesting Padgett's fundraiser
today. It was a great 'Welcome Wagon' for the first lady and a very large Peace March. Granville hasn't seen this much excitement in decades, if ever!

Funny story...two of us arrived early and were standing across from the Inn on 'our' corner (across the street from the W corner, which I noticed smelled like sulfur...lol). My sign read: Corruption is Killing our Democracy and I had pasted play money on it. I had dressed entirely in black....imagine a Mafia funeral (for our dying Democracy)....black hat, veil, and gloves.

Anyway, a very large repug woman marches up to me and rips the sign out of my hands and nearly knocks the eyeglasses off of the REPORTER WHO WAS INTERVIEWING US! So I follow her saying that I see her car and have the license plate....which hadn't entered Ms. Repugnant's little brain.

She ended up returning my sign and calling ME rude. Ain't that just like those hypocritical repugs??? She apologized to the reporter and ended up giving the reporter her name. Also, it seems that she had someone else's car who would have been very pissed if the police showed up at her house.

All I said to her: You're damn lucky there's no law against being stupid.

Met some really cool people and a fellow DUer face to face! Lots of great signs too. I'll be anxious to see what our local reporter writes up on the 'incident.'

4. Can't wait to see what the Advocate prints
tomorrow. The Reporter was a young woman....seemed very cool...we'll see what she (or her editor) prints tomorrow. There was a photographer, too.

7. From the Times Reporter:
GRANVILLE – There was no mention of disgraced U.S. Rep. Bob Ney. There was no link to unpopular Gov. Bob Taft. There were no references to Joy Padgett’s personal bankruptcy.

But Padgett, a state senator from Coshocton, made clear at a Tuesday fundraiser she’s tying her race for the 18th Congressional District seat to President Bush, whose own job approval rating is less than 50 percent.

(snip)
A smattering of protesters quietly held signs about a block from where the two met with about 300 people, mostly women, in several big white tents outside a local inn.

Bush gave an 11-minute speech filled with information clearly provided by the Padgett camp, including a one-line joke that Padgett had used about an hour earlier to the same crowd.

Bankrupt Joy is tying her campaign to Bush. I guess Ney and Taft aren't her buddies any more.

8. Great pictures on The Advocate website

More than half of the pictures are of protestors. It looks like a reflection of the way the election will go.

10. These are great pictures!
We should start a thread in GD with these! The organized Peace Vigil was set up by a DUer. In addition, DUers meet for the first time on the streets of Granville. It was really fun for me to get to put faces to names and it was exciting to see what can be done with a few phone calls...and a bit of village paperwork. Peace, Kim

11. Please do start a thread
My posts tend to be ignored. I loved the fact that the protestors got more pics than Laura. Someone in Newark is a friend. Thanks for going. We must make sure that Bankrupt Joy does not win.

12. I have discovered that I am more Amish than I thought
How did you get the link to appear as it does above? I will start one but I need a little help with the link. I am familiar with 'copy and paste' but that does not produce the result I need. I have read the articles in the Advocate and I have a pit in my stomach. What crap!!! Even the story about the peaceful protesters includes pablum about Laura and how wonderful she is. We need an article that represents the sane thoughts of people who took time out of a day to protest in a respectful way, the horror that our country has become. It is just sad. Oh well...If you can walk me through the link debacle I will be happy to share the pictures. They are great and it does make me proud that we could stand on the street with others of like and unlike minds and not have any problems. Peace, Kim

13. Click on the link in my post
That will open the page in the Advocate. Then go to the address line in your browser, highlight, copy, and paste it in your post. It won't be in color until you preview or send the post. I usually preview it to make sure it works. Good luck. cmd

16. I marched in the Utica Homecoming Parade this evening handing
out literature on Brown, Lupher, and the entire Dem slate....told everyone about our successful protest.

The reporter my friend and I were speaking to yesterday was young (aren't they called 'cubs?'), and I figured her editor wouldn't let our comments into the paper.

So I guess it's time for another LTTE.

Does anyone know why Padgett filed bankruptcy?

17. Check out James Brodbelt Harris's website

He has a lot of info for you. I would try to decipher, but have had a little too much vino. It's best I don't go there. However............brass knuckles are illegal in Ohio, so Laura and Joy advocated breaking Ohio law yesterday. Love those republican values. What WILL we tell our children?

18. Thanks....I googled around a bit and
found that she and her husband got a $737,000 SBA loan in August of '04 which is in the midst of her campaign against Terry Anderson....and then in late '05 (just a bit over a year) files bankruptcy.

What doesn't smell right about this?

Anyway, given this little bit of info, I wrote a short LTTE of the Advocate:

Ohio is Number One! And I don't mean in football. I just read that Ohio is Number One in job loss, bankruptcies, foreclosures, and delinquent mortgages. This is what 16 years of one-party Republican rule has given the once great state of Ohio. This corruption and thievery must stop now.

I recently learned that Joy Padgett who wants to advance her career from state politics in the Ohio Senate to the United States Congress has filed bankruptcy. She did so after getting a $737,000 loan from the Small Business Administration (taxpayer guaranteed) in 2004 and declaring bankruptcy in 2005. Where did all that money go in such a short time?

How stupid does she think Ohioans are?

I'm not holding my breath to see it published....but I should submit it to the paper in Dover...Zack's home turf.

Think I'll go have a glass of wine and watch Colbert!

20. Zack's team is working hard to win
We started on an unfair playing ground. The 18th is gerrymandered for republican victories. Nevertheless, Zack is running strong. He has an active team behind him with many good volunteers backing them up. The republicans have just poured another half mil into the race. Money is a factor. Help out if you can.
