“U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland, the Democratic nominee, led the money chase by raising $2.5 million in June and July, bringing to $8.8 million the total he has raised since entering the race 15 months ago. Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell, the Republican nominee, raised $2.1 million in June and July, bringing his total to $8.2 million.

Even so, both candidates are expected to hoard their cash for the approaching post-Labor Day television advertising blitz. Blackwell already has reserved a significant block of time on Ohio television stations for the final weeks of the campaign.
***
The Blackwell campaign said a Cleveland-area fundraiser Wednesday headlined by President Bush raised $1.5 million. About half of that amount was included in yesterday’s fundraising report and the rest will be reported in the August filing, according to Carlo LoParo, a Blackwell campaign spokesman.

In the race for auditor, Republican nominee Mary Taylor reported raising $215,610 and her Democratic opponent, Barbara Sykes, raised $71,070. Republican Greg Hartmann raised about $9,000 more in June and July than his Democratic opponent for secretary of state, Jennifer Brunner. Hartmann raised $145,750 and Brunner $136,467.
