Help bid adieu to The Dick Cheney - Dayton, 8/12
This could be your last chance to say adios to the Vice Prick before he's outfitted for a jumpsuit and retired to a nice federal country club.

Per an email just received:

Team Kerry!

Help welcome Dick Cheney back to Dayton this Thursday! Cheney will be speaking to veterans at 10 am at the Convention Center ... we will gather at 8:30 am at Dave Hall Plaza across from the Convention Center to promote our message.

Feel free to bring homemade signs but please remember our audience ... we do not want to say anything that could be taken to be disrespectful of veterans or those currently serving our country.

Have a good day!

1. How To Get There?
Oilem,

Do you have any clue about how to navigate downtown tomorrow morning? My husband was at the precinct captains meeting tonight at HQ and already they had a lot of streets blocked off...I tried calling around this afternoon to get answers, but no one knew the exact traffic plan. Sounds like downtown around the Convention Center's sealed off pretty tight.

I'm planning to leave fairly early in case I have to park hell and gone from Dave Hall Plaza.

(BTW, I could not make the Mitakides rally today. Hope it went well!)

2. Better late than... never mind...
I hope you were able to make it. For anyone interested, the turnout was wonderful - a quick headcount places the number at about 200. Plus one Bushie who was actually taking it quite well.

The local media pronounced that "several dozen" protestors showed up. Depends on the meaning of "several", I guess.

Considering that The Dick spoke to 500, I'd say that a protest 40% of the size of his audience is mighty impressive.

Thanks to any DUer's who were there!

3. Yep, I Was There
It was quite an experience, especially the old man's insistence on "debating" with the union members. I had to give the guy credit for his moxie, though. And I'm glad someone else caught on to the media's underplaying of the turnout. I thought for something that was organized spur-of-the-moment (I got the e-mail yesterday afternoon) the crowd was excellent. But as usual the media's coverage is quite (shall we say) slanted -- but what can you expect?

What I liked most about it was that there was a cross-section there: laid-off workers, union members, students, veterans, moms like myself, young kids. In other words, Just Folks. I believe that was a much more accurate representation of the real America (and what some of us are going through) than what was found inside the Convention Center. Everyone had a deep, personal reason for being there. It also felt good getting all those signs of support from the cars and buses (and train!) prior to the speech. I think there's A LOT of support for Kerry out there!

For the most part, I think we all did ourselves and John Kerry proud. And I beg to disagree with the Hon. Dick: I don't think Dayton's Bush Country.
