Backroom Battles (Mother Jones - Paul Hackett)
Edited on Fri Feb-17-06 02:50 AM by VolcanoJen
Well, this article is sure to stir up some flames.

Backroom Battles: Economic Sabotage, Whisper Campaigns, And Threats: How The Democrats Took Paul Hackett Out

A few paragraphs that really caught my eye:

In late November, Hackett got a call from Sen. Harry Reid. I hear theres a photo of you mistreating bodies in Iraq. Is it true? demanded the Senate minority leader. No sir, replied Hackett. To drive home his point, Hackett traveled to Washington to show Reids staff the photo in question. Hackett declined to send me the photo, but he insists that it shows another Marinenot Hackettunloading a sealed body bag from a truck. There was nothing disrespectful or unprofessional, he insists. That was a photo of a Marine doing his job. If you dont like what theyre doing, dont send Marines into war.

<snip>

But the whispering continued, and Hackett was troubled. It creates doubt and suspicion, Hackett told me, saying his close supporters were asking him privately about the rumors. It tarnishes my very strength as a candidate, my military service. Its like you take a handful of seeds, throw them up in the wind, and they blow all around and start growing. It really bothered me.

<snip>

Hackett was infuriated by the subterfuge. I felt like I got fucked by the Democratic Party because they enticed me in and then they pulled the rug out from beneath me. It sounds eerily familiar to sending in the military to Iraq, which was a misuse of the military, and then not giving them what they need to fight.

<snip>

Hackett, who says he would still like to help retool the Democratic Party, ends his meteoric political career with some advice for other maverick candidates. They simply cant rely on any of the party infrastructure to help them, and they must assume that people at high levels will work against them. These guys, he says of the party insiders, view the Senate as a club. Theyre not gonna welcome you if one day they turn the key on the clubhouse door and you are sitting there with your feet on the table flippin them the middle finger. I understand that from their perspective. It works for them, but not for the rest of us out here.

The last paragraph says it all for so many of us.

I know we've refrained from airing some of our dirtiest laundry in this forum to date. Now that media organizations have opened the can of worms, we may as well be honest about it.

The smears happened, I heard them with my own ears. It's made me sick not to talk about them, as sick as it made me to hear them, and honestly, I suspect the Republicans are behind the whole goddamned thing, which is why I thought it shouldn't be brought up. I still feel that the photo smear came from outside, regardless of any conclusion Mother Jones draws.

But it's more or less out in the open now, even though most of you know we've been walking on eggshells about the whole "photos" issue.

on edit: added paragraph beginning "Hackett, who says he..."

1. A dynamite reporter could find if the gop was behind the "war photos"smear
David Goodman "left it hanging" there by suggesting it could have been GOP operatives. I wish he had finished the investigation. Now David has accomplished floating an idea out there that just may become commonly-held knowledge, despite its veracity. I am pretty sure that David is Amy Goodman's brother.

It's just a matter of time. This story is toxic and it has a life of its own. They knew for months and did nothing while it was still under wraps. Now they must act very quickly before it gets beyond something they can manage.

I give them 12 hours.

Not a single supporter of Brown has said they don't like Hackett. Most of us like and respect him but felt he wasn't ready for such a big race.

Its been difficult enough to continue to support him and hope he has a political future while dealing with attacks his bitter supporters who have been way out of line the last few days.

But the more he talks the less credibility he has...

That someone only wants to make its point and does not care about constructive dialogue. I am not sure where "someone" is from since someone's profile does not list even the state, let alone city, it lives in.

Do you recall when and who (not names) you heard it from at the very first?

We should try as much as we can to get to the bottom of this. I was thinking yesterday this is a project for those canny DU researchers! They can track down anything, it seems. What I want to see is backup and proof. That's what's missing. We're whispering out loud here on DU ourselves based on suspicions. We have no proof of any of it. If the Repugs did this, we have to find out. That's who I think it is, too.

Or, maybe that's because I'm just not as important as some of our Ohio party insiders who post on DU.

Hey, everyone, I live and work in Cincinnati, my name's Jennifer, I manage an upscale restaurant bar. It's a living.

I've never been stalked, either. I've got a blog, I've been posting using the same name on DU and several other forums (yes, even usenet!) as my "handle" for, hell, ten years at least, and so far, no stalkers! Amazing.

I actually never knew you were an air traffic controller. As stressful and impossible as it appears, I always thought that would be a great job.

But if you think I'm visiting the Gungeon anytime soon, yer nuts. :-)

And I have been around a the state at lot of democratic events over the last two months or so...

People talk about this kind of stuff...

I never really heard anything bad about Hackett...

The only thig I heard was that the people who were leaning toward Brown wished he would have stayed in the 2nd....

There were also a few supporters...

But mainly people were concerned about the three big races.... Gov... SOS and Auditor....

Really, the party regulars are starved for jobs... A lot are this close to qualifying for state retirement....

The Senate has very few jobs to offer.... The Gov, thousands......

Buty something this juicy would have been spreading like wild fire....

and WCGreen is correct, something like this would have spread like wildfire through the local blogosphere and the Ohio Dem political grapevine.

The first I heard of a "whisper campaign" was here on DU on the day Hackett withdrew from the race. Was DU the first place it was posted? The story has gone from DU to this article.

I've talked to many people in the Ohio blogosphere and we wouldn't touch it, even though we've heard about it for months. It was so toxic and so hard to track down that writing about it would have unleashed a firestorm on our houses. The night that Mother Jones article was released I was talking to several bloggers about the implications of even writing about this story and how we needed to get more confirmation before we touched it. I had some, but wanted people who would go on the record.

I'm glad that Mother Jones wrote it up because I was getting into arguments with my wife because I was afraid of the implications of writing about the story.

The people that this "whisper campaign" was targetted against was leadership within the Ohio Democratic Party. It's not something that would just travel around anywhere, although it would appear that it did reach the leadership in Washington. While none of them were talking to us lowly bloggers, they were surely talking to each other.

I know that many here think that we're all about slamming Brown, and you can believe whatever you want to believe.

My biggest hope is that the people who can fix things step up and start fixing (firing) instead of just trying to cover up and blame this story away. MANY journalists are looking into this story. More will come out. The blogs are not the problem. In fact, we've been warning you about just this kinda stuff for a very long time.

28. It reached the leadership in Washington
Hackett called Schumer in the "Fall" he says, and told Chuck Schumer himself. So it didn't reach the leadership in Washington, that we know of, by a whisper campaign, but by Paul Hackett. It's possible they knew of it before this, but we don't know that from anything that's been published or discussed.

I'm interested in what you say here:

'The people that this "whisper campaign" was targetted against was leadership within the Ohio Democratic Party.'

Can you please elaborate?

Also, when did you yourself first hear the whisper? What month? In what general circumstance?

From what you write about fixing and firing you seem to be saying you know this was Democrat-driven. I would like to know one way or another, if possible, so what is your basis for that belief?

FYI, I am not in either camp, supportive of both men, and not in Ohio. My concern here is veterans being Swiftboated.

30. Other way around
Actually, it was the other way around. From the Mother Jones article:

http://motherjones.com/news/update/2006/02/hackett_drop...

In late November, Hackett got a call from Sen. Harry Reid. I hear theres a photo of you mistreating bodies in Iraq. Is it true? demanded the Senate minority leader. No sir, replied Hackett.

The basis for my belief that it was Democrat driven was talking to a senior leader of the Ohio Democratic Party who spelled the whole story out to me including graphic details about the pictures.

I first started hearing about it at get togethers in Columbus last year. I can't get more specific than that, but I honestly can't remember. It sounded so insane and it was so third hand that I discounted it as crazy noise from some pro-DeWine partisan. In hindsight I wish I would have been more agressive about this story. I didn't start hearing the name of who was doing it until very recently.

I'm not going to lead on this one. If I do it the story instantly passes to the right wing machine and we're in full out damage control mode. The leadership needs to step up and control this story and punish the guilty. They can instigate a full out investigation. They can bring out the truth one way of another so that everyone can get beyond that.

49. This is what I meant, ohio2nd

Hackett acknowledged hearing rumors that he had committed war crimes dating back to the day he first announced his candidacy in October. He called the rumors an "absolute falsehood and lie" and said that in the fall, he had contacted New York Sen. Charles Schumer about them. Schumer, who heads the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, "assured me he would put a stop to it,'' he said.

Hackett said he also got a call from Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid about the rumors, and met with Reid in Washington to put the matter to rest, he said.

http://www.cleveland.com/weblogs/openers/index.ssf?/mtl...

We know the Reid call was in late November. Hackett heard the rumors in October. I don't have the impression he waited until hearing from Reid, but called Schumer and told him straight out about the rumors himself. So that's why I say the leadership heard from Hackett first, as far as we can tell, anyway. There's no reason to say they didn't already know, but based on what's been published, Hackett told them himself.

Thanks for addressing my questions as best you could. I realize how painful all of this must be for you. :pals:

35. It says in the article...
The first rumor that I heard was probably a month and a half ago, Dave Lane, chair of the Clermont County Democratic Party, told me the day after Hackett pulled out of the race. I heard it more than once that someone was distributing photos of Paul in Iraq with Iraqi war casualties with captions or suggestions that Paul had committed some sort of atrocities. Who did it? I have no idea. It sounds like a Republican M.O. to me, but I have no proof of that. But if it was someone on my side of the fence, I have a real problem with that. I have a hard time believing that a Democrat would do that to another Democrat.

So obviously, some Democrats in Ohio were hearing about it, since one is quoted.

There is a lot about Goodman's story that is incomplete. For one, if there were common whispering rumors a month and a half ago, how was it that we political junkies and all the Ohio bloggers not pick up on it until Goodman's article came out. Does that make sense? Were there such stories at new year's in DU? I don't remember them. I did not search for them, though.

48. I see. PD's Elizabeth Auster is saying she sat on the story
So, to date, we have Elizabeth Auster, Paul Hackett, and the Clermont County guy saying that these "rumors" have been floating around for a "month and a half", or "months". This is all news to me.

If this had been mentioned in this forum in that time period, I am sure it would have gone off like a wildfire.

Btw, I am not a "party insider" and never said I was.

10. That just pisses me off even more
And Hackett's right. Both sides of the aisle have to stop treating Capitol Hill and their jobs like they are some kind of entitled membership in an exclusive country club. I said it earlier today and I'll say it again: Neither party likes a boat-rocker, and if Diebold doesn't get you, the party bosses will.

Hackett was screwed by the Dems, and it makes me absolutely sick that someone like Harry Reid would dare question the integrity of his service in Iraq. Paul, as much as I hate to say it, you're probably TOO good for politics. And isn't that saying something?

Of course I will vote for Brown over DeWine. But I will do so under protest because a viable candidate -- in terms of conviction and integrity, if not in terms of money or "numbers" -- was denied a chance to compete.

The Plain Dealer is reporting that they heard about this last year, reporting that they approached Hackett about it:

If your looking to investigate the story more, a key area to focus your attention on is the battle for endorsements that was waged.

http://wegoted.com/dailyAudio/index.asp

Is there something rotten in the state of Ohio? Paul Hackett was outpolling the incumbent and his competition in the Ohio Senate race yet withdrew today. Why did he step aside? Did Chuck Schumer make calls telling supporters to stop sending money? What was Rep. Waxman's role? Is there any chance Hackett will run for the House? So many questions, we've got your answers.

Is that necessary?

Does one have to be utterly on top of the daily vitriol and bitterness of this forum in order to qualify for posting?

At least greenohio is clearly a resident of Ohio (yeh Cincy!), which is more than I can say for some of the more active posters here*. It's no problem if a poster isn't from Ohio, but the ones that don't live here should stop pretending they do.

This isn't my forum, but I welcome all Ohioans (yes, even the ones I disagree with) to come talk here, whether its their first post, their third post in a year, or their thirteenth post today.

From the looks of things, we could use some fresh minds around here.

The only new rule we should work on in the Ohio Forum is treating is other with more civility. This is a damned rough crowd.

* I appreciate that you're a proud Ohioan too, Boreal.

66. If...
Edited on Sun Feb-19-06 01:06 AM by oustudent101
If Paul Hackett had had the fundraising ability to raise the money, he would have stayed in the race for U.S. Senate.

If Paul Hackett had increased his name recognition and persuaded more voters to support his candidacy, he would have stayed in the race for the U.S. Senate.

Not even one week before he ended his race for the U.S. Senate, he opened an office in Columbus.

Not even one week before he ended his race for the U.S. Senate, he publicly stated he had the funds to cover his overhead costs and could compete financially with Sherrod Brown.

SO WHAT HAPPENED? WHAT MADE PAUL HACKETT DROP OUT OF OHIO'S DEMOCRATIC U.S. SENATORIAL PRIMARY?

Was it that his donors, after being persuaded by Sherrod Brown supporters decided to support Sherrod Brown over Paul Hackett? Likely, yes.

Should anyone be mad about this? Absolutely not.

Why not? Because Randi Rhodes did the same thing for Paul Hackett, endorsing his candidacy, encouring her listeners nationwide to support Paul Hackett over Sherrod Brown.

Did Sherrod Brown supporters cry and whine about Randi Rhodes being unfair, dabbling in Ohio's primary? Not at all.

Was it his poll, which stated that he had made barely even a dent in winning over Sherrod Brown supporters or undecideds? Likely, yes, that's why he dropped out.

Should anyone be mad about this? Absolutely not.

Why not? Because if your message is not receptive to the general audience - or if you think you cannot get this message out to change opinion, common sense says get outta the race!

Did Sherrod Brown supporters cry and whine about how Hackett gained 8 points in the polls? Not at all - they backed Sherrod Brown with their heart and soul.

But, wait, wasn't it that Paul Hackett was "swiftboated" by everyone in the democratic party leadership, in Columbus and Washington DC? No, but will we know if there is any truth to the allegations made against Paul Hackett unless these "photos" come out in to the public? If these rumors are untrue, let it be known. If they are true, then...

The reason why Paul Hackett opened his office and a week later quit the U.S. Senate race...

The reason why Paul Hackett hired 30+ staffers and a month later quit the U.S. Senate race...

The reason why Paul Hackett decided he would forever be out of politics after quitting the U.S. Senate race...

Is because there is something in his past that he feels would hurt his chances or credibility running for elected office.

I am not insinuating that Paul Hackett ever created a war crime. I am proposing however that you don't leave the U.S. Senate race two days before the filing deadline because you might not have the money or your might not have the greatest polling - you don't leave the U.S. Senate race accusing democratic leadership of cutting off your fundraising legs and backing the frontrunning - you don't leave the U.S. Senate race in these ways (a good offense is a good defense) unless something is really, really, really wrong.

Maybe something was really wrong, maybe there are truths to these rumors or maybe there are not. Until this is cleared up, however, we should not assume that Paul Hackett or Chuck Schumer is telling us the truth. We should not assume that anyone was swiftboated.

And one more thing - John Kerry was swiftboated and he fought back. He fought back to clear his good name. He fought back because the Republican Machine was tearing his record to pieces with lies. Paul Hackett didn't fight back, he quit. That doesn't sound like much of a push back to any pertinent accusations.

72. I agree
Plus, although I have been and always been a loyal Sherrod Brown supporter (i feel a need to disclose that), I'm starting to feel like I give Hackett more credit than some of his supporters.

For crying out loud, Paul Hackett is a smart man that came to a smart decision. And he's got his life back; he's already being circumspect (in my opinion, this speaks to his toughness and resilience); he stuck to his word and didnt run in a race he promised not to (not saying that Sherrod ever promised he wouldn't run for Senate; at best I think he would have been noncommittal, which could have easily been misinterpreted by ANY hopeful office seeker); Paul Hackett now has national name recognition (even though he's not black, as Rush pointed out). He's a hero.

GIVE HIM SOME CREDIT; LET HIM LIVE HIS LIFE IN PEACE FOR AWHILE.

Ha ha ha ha ha!! "John Kerry was swiftboated and he fought back."

I'm seriously doubled over. HA HA HA HA HA!!! Jesus, outstudent101, what election were you watching? He didn't fight back, not even once.

"Kerry fought back!"

Bwaaaaaaa ha ha ha ha ha hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Go read Newsweek's "Election 2004: How Bush-Cheney Won."

You really must be a student, because you've got a lot to learn. And I, for one, could do without your bullshit revisionist history.

Election 2004 in a nutshell for the students and those who have lost their memory:

a) John Kerry wins nomination, says "Bring It On!"

b) Republicans, led and masterminded by Rove, proceed to Bring It On.

c) Kerry, guided by 0-8 loser Bob Shrum, withers and wilts like a precious little flower, refusing to "dignify swiftboating by defending self." As Rove planned, Americans think, predictably, "Hmmm, if he can't defend himself, then..." Kerry loses election.

You, and about four other Ohio Forum regulars, are why Democrats will remain the permanent opposition party in this nation (and especially in this state) for some time to come. And a shitty opposition party, at that.

If none of these items were true about Hackett, he would still be in the race, he would have fought against the swift boaters.

I was out in the field working for John Kerry, we fought back and we fought back hard. It would seem as though you are the one who needs to leave your wacked out world and step into the place we call "the real fucking world"

I think most will agree - you missed the boat on this one.

If Hackett was being attacked unrighteously, he would have fought back. He wasn't a winner and he'll be remembered as that guy who left the race for U.S. Senate whining and complaining about his hurt ego.

86. I never implied that you were young.
Edited on Mon Feb-20-06 12:53 AM by VolcanoJen
I did imply that you were a student.

I was in Ohio for the Kerry campaign, and let me tell you something, you guys didn't fight back one inch on the swiftboaters. You're rewriting history. I don't know what field you were out in, but the swiftboat attacks began in mid July, and started cutting into Kerry's swing support in the polls in early August, when the media started playing those ads for free. The first Kerry campaign media buy waged against the swiftboat attacks didn't occur until the last days of August, and it was a small buy, much of it in Ohio. By then, Newsweek referred to the media buy "like using a fly swatter against an elephant."

That's the way it happened. You might not like the way Newsweek characterized it, but the point was clear... the swiftboat attacks went unanswered until far too late. Now, I'm not even sure if you live in Ohio, but I can tell you that they took their toll on Kerry down here in southwestern Ohio, where he lost the state. The swing votes that could have been harvested down here were innumerable. People were angry with Bush and time was ripe... until they went after his military service and he didn't say a damned thing about it.

I kept fighting on, outstudent, but I saw it all start to fall apart at that moment. I'm sure other Ohio DUers here will remember feeling the same way; will remember how frustrated and impatient we were for Kerry to answer the horrible attacks.

Your personal attacks won't help you to change history. And your personal attacks aren't winning your candidate any heartfelt support.

You've still got much to learn, student.

edit: After reading this post, and post #66, I think you're coming precariously close to swiftboating Paul Hackett yourself. You'd be wise to step back from that ledge. If you're the Democrat and Kerry supporter you say you are, you owe the man the benefit of the doubt, you owe him your respect, and you owe him your thanks for his service.

115. Paul Hackett didn't release the $5,000 Oppo package.
$5,000 worth of Oppo... wow. Eye-popping!! $5,000 is probably what it cost the "off-the-record" consultant to subscribe to the Congressional Record archive.

The Republicans will spend millions on Brown Oppo. Do you think they won't comb through every inch of his voting record, his personal life, his business dealings? Are you seriously that naive?

That information was not released by Hackett, it was released by an "off-the-record" consultant (who probably now works for the Brown campaign).

If you really want to win in November, you'll start attacking Mike Dewine. You're going to need every Democratic vote in this state to win, and you're not off to a good start. At all.

And, on a personal note, Mr/Ms 37 Posts Who Lives God Knows Where, I joined Democratic Underground on January 20th, 2001. The very first day. How dare you impugn my integrity as a Democratic voter and activist. Impugning the integrity of a veteran, though? That's just beyond the goddamned pale. The Republicans are watching... you get that, don't you?

Eh, probably not.

93. Hey, those who would rewrite history...
... get me cranked up.

I've calmed down a little since I wrote that post. Point well taken.

And I wholeheartedly agree with you on the matter.

103. No.....you have the cart before the horse....
Hackett was "rubbed-out" and donations were cut-off which is like pulling the Shivo feeding tube.

This was an inside Democratic "hit".....and I give Sherrod Brown all the credit. I believe he planted moles inside the Hackett camp. He is a spoiled brat at this point. He felt it was "his turn" and called in his markers to hang onto their wallets. He is a poor team player.

I'm encouraging ALL to write-In Hackett as your Senate Candidate on May 2, 2006.

110. Will do.
Hell, I may even do it in November. I've done it before.

Hackett is STILL my choice and my candidate.

114. Ya know, that's not a bad idea.
I don't think I'd have the stomach to do it in November, especially if the Dewine-Brown race looks close, but I'll certainly write in Hackett on May 2.

Well, I posted this thread, checked back on it a little later, and there were only a handful of responses. Since then, I've been busy researching a writing project for a piece I'm involved in, and I really threw myself into it, so I apologize for not checking back.

Any of you who wish to interpret my absence as running away from the facts is a fool. Hear that? A damned fool.

Yes, I heard the smears with my own ears. Goddammit, the ones I heard about were far uglier than the ones spoken of in that Mother Jones article. There are a few other posters in this thread who heard them, too. There are a few other posters who would like to pretend they don't know what I'm talking about, and they'd be full of shit, but it would be rude of me to point that out. I do keep all of my PM's, though, even the ones from back last fall. Call me a liar again.

I'm still working on the meme that the Republicans started the swiftboating of Paul Hackett. But it turns my stomach to think I could be really, really wrong about that.

Back to writing... this Forum is exhausting. Honestly, I find about five or six of you entirely annoying, unrealistic, dishonest, a little stupid, and downright bullying, and I think you and your kind are poisonous to the Ohio Democratic Party, and I think you're addicted to losing, and I'm staying far, far away from you.

Over, and out.

100. smears & ears
Elizabeth Auster at the PD reported that it was "in the blogs" months ago as did the Clermont Cty Democrat (whose name escapes me). If it was in the "blogs", then where is the record? D Goodman screwed up by not following up on those details.

113. Where did Auster write that?
I just read through her "Complex Mix" article again, as well as her "Was Hackett Swiftboated" blog entry, and she writes no such thing.

The word "blog" doesn't appear in either entries.

The terminology she uses is "a rumor that circulated in Democratic circles."

David Lane, the Clermont Party Chair, also makes no mention of blogs as his source of the rumors.

Mind providing a link to the article(s) in which Auster or Lane say the rumors were "in the blogs"?

118. yes, you are right
sorry. However, there still is nothing to document a smear campaign from months ago. You said you heard it. Well, considering how anonymous political types revel in releasing grime, I am extremely surprised it never came out on DU. :wow:

119. Read OH2's posts for background on why it never came out.

You know, some of us in southwestern Ohio really stick together.

And we weren't about to fan the flames of Impugning the Integrity of an Iraq War Veteran our damned selves. Why put it out there before it was out there?

Why cut our own throats on a lie?

And, Auster herself writes that the rumor was circulating during the campaign. She didn't write about them then, either.

120. & that well connected blogger you cite is going to lay in the weeds
...on this story. He gets a 33 minute post-campaign interview with Paul Hackett, so he obviously has access. However, he disappoints us by not asking Paul one more teensy weensy question. (then again, the guy does have Jean Schmidt as his personal avatar-ha ha ha).

This story does not fit. I am a skeptic. Always have been, always will be. And why should I believe Auster? That creep won't even report whether Hackett thinks the leaks were by Dems or gops. Neither did David Goodman.
