It was some Hollywood (or Broadway?) scriptwriter's idea of a generic nasal Northeastern accent, methinks.

Think of the honking Hot Box girls in "Guys and Dolls", for instance.

I've lived there nearly 30 years, and NEVER ONCE heard a native pronounce it thus. "Juhsey", yes. "Joisey," never.

anyone heading downtheshore this weekend?

6. Growing up in The Bronx and living later in Manhattan
It was almost always "Jersey", occasionally "New Jersey", but Never, Ever "Joisey". Must be a Brooklyn and/or Hollywood Thing.
