After Baines loss Democrats take another look at Congressional race
By JAMES W. PINDELL
PoliticsNH.com

Nov. 9 - Manchester Mayor Bob Baines's shocking re-election loss had Democrats the day after trying to figure out what it means for the First District Congressional race next year given that Baines appeared to be the likely Democratic nominee.

One Democrat told PoliticsNH.com that while he genuinely was exploring a Congressional run, he will no longer take his cues from the Baines camp as to whether or not to actually make it official.

Lawyer and veteran Peter Duffy (D-Manchester) said in an interview from now on his campaign "full speed ahead".

"I did intend to run, but I was getting signals that Baines was running. If he actually was going to do it I might have reconsidered," said Duffy. "But now I am the most viable candidate that can beat Jeb Bradley.

1. More mush!
Frankly, if you were afraid of Bob Baines, you shouldn't be taking on Jeb Bradley.

The Democratic nominee can't be another party-approved, play-along type. What do the Democrats need? The great baseball manager Leo Durocher said it best in a different context:

"Give me some scratching, diving, hungry ballplayers who come to kill you."

2. What are you talking about?

The story said that he might have reconsidered if Baines ran, not that he definitely would not have run, or that he was afraid of Baines. Also, didn't this fellow run against Nadeau two years ago, when Nadeau had the support of establishment types like Bill Shaheen? So he certainly isn't a party approved, play along type. You shouldn't make stuff up, voters want honesty and straight talk from their candidates.

3. Pete Duffy
Mr. Duffy is an extremely nice guy, who cares about his country. Against a lot of odds he finished ahead of Bob Bruce and myself in last years primary finishing second only to Justin Nadeau.

In my opinion, Pete is the best candidate the democrats can put up against Jeb Bradley.

It looks as though the primary will be a large competitive field next year so anything can happen, and I wouldn't be surprised if the nominee comes away with less then 30% in the primary.

Interesting how this thread drew out the One-Post Wonders, isn't it.

Please do me a favor. Ask Kathy Sullivan who she voted for in 2004.

It was Duffy. Heck, her husband was a steering committee member. Duffy is most definitely an insider. If you think he is Paul Hackett version 2.0, then you are sorely mistaken.

7. Yes, but does anyone have any information as to who else
is running or as to Hodes chances?

Bass has been pretty good on the ANWR issue, but he's still a Republican with ties to DeLay. I'd like to back the best Dem possible, but I'm not sure who else is running.
