Jay Nixon to run for Governor in 2008

Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon filed the paperwork Thursday to launch a 2008 campaign for governor, resolving any doubts about his desire to replace Gov. Matt Blunt.

"In this step, my focus is on the people of Missouri and our incumbent governor," Nixon said in an interview with Post-Dispatch editorial writers and reporters. "I just think that the time is right."

---------------------

He should have a great shot at it - so many people are mad about baby Blunt's medicare cuts.

1. no, not Nixon!
I'd have to vote 3rd party...unless someone can convince me he isn't what he seems....

We can find a better Dem to run, can't we?

I couldn't vote for Blunt...and I'd HATE to have to vote 3rd party knowing that it might give Blunt another term to screw the state...but NIXON?

6. This is great.
Will missouri let us recall the baby, or do we have to take the leg. and impeach him?

7. I don't think recall is an option in Missouri
we'll have to either impeach him (a VERY long shot...even if we gain ground in the next legislative elections, I doubt it'd be enough to impeach him...if that's even an option in Missouri) or vote him out.

Unfortunately, I don't think Nixon's the best guy to replace him with.

11. He doesn't have the support he should have
in St. Louis and KC. It will be a tough race for him.

12. doesn't have the support he "should have"?
Why should he have that support?

I know there is a lot of resentment against him in the cities on the busing/desegregation in schools issue.

Here's another example of why I won't be voting for him (sorry, no link, as it's from an expired story on stltoday.com):

"Nixon asserted that the Democratic Party needs more candidates, nationally and in the state, who reflect mainstream America. For example, he said he was Missouri's only Democratic statewide candidate to embrace the state constitutional amendment defining marriage as only between a man and woman."

This does not make me willing to vote for him. We can do better.

13. He should have that support to guarantee a win
I agree with you. I don't like him as a candidate. And one of the main reasons is that he is not going to get enough votes in the metro areas.

15. Nixon can win-- embrace him!
Jay Nixon is the completely right choice for governor. We can always say, he shoulda beat Bond, but who shouldn't have? That's in the past and this is the future. Jay Nixon can win outstate MO. What do KC/StL have against him? Busing? If that's it, that's a lousy excuse.

A progressive like Graham would be great. But I don't think he'd stand a chance outstate. Think beyond the I-70 corridor.. that's all I'm sayin.

Go Jay!

16. Try reading my previous post
or, since that was apparently too much...

Here is the quote again:

"Nixon asserted that the Democratic Party needs more candidates, nationally and in the state, who reflect mainstream America. For example, he said he was Missouri's only Democratic statewide candidate to embrace the state constitutional amendment defining marriage as only between a man and woman."

You can support Nixon if you like, but I have no interest in a DINO who trumpets his bigotry against gays as a virtue.

19. If you think Nixon would have advocated such a policy like Blunt...
If Nixon was Gov. there would have been no such amendment to even vote on. He may say he supports it and maybe he does but it would not have been at the top of his list of things to do. It wouldn't have been in the middle of his list. I bet it would have never happened under Nixon. Dems don't do that and when I believe differently I will join you. Remember Nixon backed Holden on having the vote at a different time than Nov. 4th. He did that so Dems could win and so we can fight the very things that you advocate. If you want equal rights for gays vote Dem.
