Former state education commissioner Cheri Pierson Yecke is sizing up a run for Congress in the Sixth District should Rep. Mark Kennedy take a shot at the Senate in 2006.
Yecke's interest, which she expressed in an interview Monday, puts her on a growing list of potential GOP candidates jockeying behind the scenes in case the Kennedy seat becomes vacant. Kennedy, who recently won a third term, has been mum on his political plans. But he is widely expected to enter the race against Democratic Sen. Mark Dayton.
"It's beyond scouting for the seat. I am very interested in that seat," Yecke said. Other Republicans said to be interested in running for the seat are Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer, state Sen. Michele Bachmann, state Rep. Jim Knoblach and state Rep. Phil Krinkie.
Snip
Only eight months ago, Yecke suffered a major political defeat when the Minnesota Senate voted along party lines to remove her from the commissioner's post. Yecke, who stressed her conservative views in the interview, said she fits the district. She cited her opposition to abortion rights and her embrace of a tax philosophy that leads to smaller government, among other things.

2. She also had an article...
... published in the Strib right after she was fired in which she said we don't need any separation of church and state.

Because I read today in Saturday's paper: If Kennedy goes after Daytons seat, Mary Kiffmeyer will be running for Kennedy's house seat.

For shame!

On edit, I should have read the whole post before freaking out!

5. Really

So, if Kiffmeyer runs, who will be the leader for the Sec of State position for the GOP? Who has showed intrest in it for the DFL?

What are the odds of these races in District 6:

Wetterling vs Kiffmeyer
Wetterling vs Yecke
Other DFLer vs Kiffmeyer
Other DFLer vs Yecke

Are there any names who would either run if Wetterling decides not to run again or would want to challenge her in the primary?

Yecke is wayyyy out there.

6. Yecke would be a GREAT candidate for us....
She's so far out that even Paul Wellstone would look like a moderate. She's made quite a name for herself so far, due to her wacked-out views on public education.

She'll be such an easy target (even with lots of GOP $$) that the DFL will start the race with a giant leg up. The 6th leans GOP, but it's fiscally conservative/culturally liberal-- a perfect place for a DFLer to dominate.

I hope like hell Yecke runs-- she's a sitting duck.

7. Does anyone think Bachmann or Kiffmeyer
would be beat by Yuckie?

Besides being an extremist, she's an import, isn't she?

9. Thanks for the info.
I was under the impression that as Bush's handpicked candidate to undermine public education in MN, she was from outside the state. I guess the one doesn't necessarily follow upon the other.

10. me too - I heard comments that she was from the VA school system
and why did Pawlenty pick someone from such a low achievement state to come and head/ruin MN's education system ... I assumed she was 'from' out of state too
