I talked to my state rep's office today (my rep is Margaret Anderson Kelliher, the minority whip-- 2nd in command of the state house DFLers), and they are not expecting a special session to be called.
So Pew-lenty will continue whining about those nasty Dems and how he can't get anything done until next January.
2. They're going to balance the budget by cutting more services
Medical assistance and nursing homes will be taking hits again this year. I suggested to my state rep (an alleged DFLer) that a raise in the income tax be considered and she reacted in horror. As another shortfall is predicted for next year, I told her that the only thing left to do will be to clear out the nursing homes and put the residents out on Lake Superior before the ice breaks up. She seemed to react with less shock at that idea. I was told that "We can be right and keep losing house seats or we can do what has to be done to be reelected." I pointed out that she and other house Democrats had been singing that song and losing seats for years and that maybe it was time for the DFL legistatures to start acting like Democrats. At least they could go down in a blaze of glory. I was told I didn't really "understand politics". To which I replied that I understood enough to know she was fucking (which also shocked her as I usually control my language in these debates) around with people's lives and her votes hurt real people (she's also anti-choice and was one of a very few DFL reps who voted for the amendment banning Gay marriage and civil unions)
Needless to say I did not vote for her endoresement - which she did get, but this was the first time in years her toadies couldn't railroad us into a unanimous endorsement.
maybe we need to draft a progressive to take over that seat. I hate to run against a fellow DFLer, but if her votes are more often than not against the party and what we stand for, maybe it's time to find somebody else.
I really hesitate to say on line because, as a member of the Central Committee I'm expected to, if not actively support an endorsed candidate, at least not publically bad mouth them or lose my place on the committee. A strange rule given what folks like Zel Miller get by with.
