Minneapolis Man Cited For Dancing In The Streets

Rick Fuentes
Reporting

(WCCO) Minneapolis Talk about six degrees of Kevin Bacon. Remember the 1984 film "Footloose" where Bacon's character moves to a small town where dancing is outlawed?

Think that was just a movie? Think again.

A week ago, police ticketed a Minneapolis man for dancing in downtown streets.

According to Minneapolis Ordinance 427.240, "No person shall dance or engage or participate in any dancing upon any public street or highway in the City; and no person shall provide for, promote or conduct any dance or dancing upon any public street or highway in the City, except at a block party."

1. looks like he got a felony - for being footloose and fancy free!

Jeese Louise, he would have been O-kay
if only he'd kicked off his Sunday shoes!

2. Violation of the man's first amendment rights
The SC has held that erotic dancing (although not in the streets), is protected speech under the constitution.

I would think the same principle would apply here.

3. What a tight-assed, soulless city
Callin' out around the world,
are you ready for a brand new beat?
Summer's here and the time is right
for dancin' in the street.
Dancin' in Chicago (dancin' in the street)
Down in New Orleans (dancin' in the street)
In New York City
But not in Minneapolis

All we need is music, sweet music,
There'll be music everywhere
There'll be swingin' swayin', and records playin,
Dancin' in the street
But not in Minneapolis

Oh it doesn't matter what you wear,
just as long as you are there.
So come on every guy, grab a girl,
Everywhere, around the world
But not in Minneapolis

There'll be dancin', they're dancin' in the street.
This is an invitation, across the nation,
A chance for folks to meet.
There'll be laughin' singin', and music swingin'
Dancin' in the street
But not in Minneapolis

Philadelphia P.A., Baltimore and D.C now,
Can't forget the motor city,
All we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
There'll be swingin' swayin', and records playin,
Dancin' in the street
But not in Minneapolis

Oh it doesn't matter what you wear,
just as long as you are there.
So come on every guy, grab a girl,
Everywhere, around the world
Except Minneapolis

They're dancin', dancin' in the street
Way down in L.A., every day
they're dancin' in the street
Lets form a big strong line, and get in time,
We're dancin' in the street,
But not in Minneapolis.

Across the ocean blue, me and you
We're dancin n the street,
But not in Minneapolis.

4. Was he dancing topless? From the pic, it appears dancing was on sidewalk
"Minneapolis Police said the man who was cited for dancing was reportedly handing out free tickets to topless bars.

That wasn't illegal, but his alleged dancing was."

Well, the good news is you can't call Minneapolis sexually repressed.
