RIP Mayor Michael A. Guido-Mayor of Dearborn
A wonderful person, dedicated mayor. Yes, he was a moderate Republican, but the things he did for the city of Dearborn won't long be forgotten.

Often dressed in dapper suits and cufflinks, Guido spent hours just listening to people, hearing them vent about everything from unkempt lawns to library hours. And he established a personal touch, mailing all residents calendars and photos of himself.

Even in predominantly Democratic Wayne County, Guido described himself as a moderate Republican, though he supported such Democrats as Rep. John Dingell and Sen. Carl Levin. This past summer, he became president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and could be seen on C-SPAN chairing meetings on homeland security with the leaders of some of the nation's biggest cities.

With its corporate headquarters, tourist attractions, nightlife, factories, shopping centers, colleges, long border with Detroit and large Mideastern community, Guido needed to be nimble when it came to such issues as globalization, foreign policy and race relations.

He didn't stumble often, but he became embroiled in several publicized quarrels over the year

1. Tears came to my eyes watching the news report about him last night
And I really didn't know much about him, other than that he was a good and long-term mayor. Sounds like he was one of the good Republicans.

3. He was "hands on". In my job, I run in and out of city halls all day
long. I can't tell you how many times I saw him hanging out with the city staffers. He seemed really pleasant and truly deserves the credit for Dearborn's turnaround. :hi:

5. A Repub in the Milliken mold.
My sis is a realator in Dearborn. I met him twice, but can't remember when or why...nice man, just like Gov. Milliken was.

Did I ever tell the story about the time I met Gov. Milliken, walking with Col. Sanders? :)

The GOP could use more like him, although I doubt too many are around these days.
