FOIA requests seek information about lobbying behind the law

By Zenobia Jeffries
The Michigan Citizen

DETROIT The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan, April 7, filed 13 Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests seeking records regarding Public Acts 4-9, the new emergency manager law passed in March.

- snip -

The ACLU of Michigan says their FOIA requests seek to understand the intent of the law, the scope of authority and oversight, the implications for cities and school districts and the involvement of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy (MCPP) the drafters of the legislation.

- snip -

The work of the Mackinac Center may have caused more confusion than clarity in the public discussion of the issues that it has addressed by systematically ignoring evidence that does not agree with its proposed solutions, according to Let the Buyer Beware.

The ACLU of Michigan sent their FOIA requests to the state superintendent, treasury department, bill sponsors, Detroit Public Schools and the cities that employ emergency managers. In addition to specific information listed below, each FOIA requests sought information about communications with any member of the executive branch, including with Gov. Snyders office.

More at the above link which details what they are looking for from each state agency, including from the legislature "Materials regarding the influence of lobbyists and private entities and contacts with the Mackinac Center for Public Policy."

2. One question that mulls in my mind are elections
If your city is trapped by one of these dictatorial managers when the next election cycle comes up, does that mean citizens are deprived of their vote?

Is that Constitutional? Isn't that similar to taxation without representation?

4. EM law..
just learned about this from the wonderful Rachel Maddow... you Michiganians (is that a word?) have your hands full.
But then again who doesn't? We have Corbett here in PA and he's quickly wrecking our state.
good luck.
