McCain pulling out of Michigan

John McCain is pulling out of Michigan, according to two Republicans, a stunning move a month away from Election Day that indicates the difficulty Republicans are having in finding blue states to put in play.

McCain will go off TV in Michigan, stop dropping mail there and send most of his staff to more competitive states, including Wisconsin, Ohio and Florida. Wisconsin went for Kerry in 2004, Ohio and Florida for Bush.

But recent polls there have shown Obama extending what had been a small lead, with the economic crisis damaging an already sagging GOP brand in a state whose economy is in tatters.

A McCain event planned for next week in Plymouth, Michiigan, has been canceled.

Palin does not want to abandon Michigan

John McCain's campaign may have given up on Michigan, but his running mate has not.

Sarah Palin, energized by last night's vice presidential debate, tells Fox News she wants to "get back" to Michigan, despite what the polls there show. The McCain campaign is pulling resources out of the state to use elsewhere.

Michigan went to the Democrats in the 2004 presidential election, but McCain felt it might be in play until recently.

<snip>

News broke yesterday that the McCain campaign was pulling out of Michigan effectively conceding the state to Barack Obama. This morning, Sarah Palin told Fox News Channels Carl Cameron that she disagreed with the decision and tried to stop the pull-out adding that she is willing to help the camp continue to fight for Michigan:

I read that this morning and I fired off a quick e-mail and said, Oh come on do we have to? Do we have to call it there? Todd and I would be happy to get to Michigan and walk through those plants of the car manufacturers. Palin said, Wed be so happy to get to speak to the people in Michigan, who are hurtin because the economy is hurtin. Whatever we can do and whatever Todd and I can do in realizing what their challenges in that state are, as we can relate to them and connect with them and promise that we wont let them down in the administration. I want to get back to Michigan and I want to try.

7. That should help the traffic situation
There won't be a huge traffic jam of McCain supporters blocking all the freeways heading toward his rally in Plymouth.

As if.

:rofl:
