Maynard High radio station fights losing its frequency

MAYNARD -- After learning of the Federal Communications Commission's decision to grant WAVM 91.7 FM's frequency to a network of Christian broadcasting stations, the station is fighting back, urging support from its congressional delegations as well as residents.
Five years ago, the station applied to the Federal Communications Commission to increase its transmitter signal from 10 to 250 watts. Upon receiving that increase, the station would have a larger footprint and have moved out of the realm of small stations -- long a target of the FCC.
However, such a change to the station "opens the floodgates for any other station to challenge the station's license and take its frequency," according to WAVM faculty advisor Joe Magno in a previous interview.
