Support Lifesaving Stem Cell Research; Tell Governor Romney He is Wrong
Received by email from massdems.org

=============================

Dear Massachusetts Democrats:

Please take a moment to read the following important message that we have forwarded to you on behalf of the the Committee for a Better Commonwealth.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends:
Governor Romney wants to stop Massachusetts’ leading research institutions from pursuing life saving stem cell research that may lead to cures for diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and spinal cord injury as well as other illnesses.

Governor Romney is wrong. And we need your help to stop him.

Stem cell research could lead to treatments and perhaps even cures for a number of devastating diseases (read more about it at http://www.masscure.org/issue/). But if Governor Romney gets his way, researchers could face prosecution for this potentially life saving research.

Unfortunately, Governor Romney has chosen to make stem cell research a political issue. It is clear Governor Romney is using his opposition to stem cell research to promote his conservative beliefs and his Presidential ambition.

Life threatening illnesses don’t strike based on what political party you belong to. Life saving cures should not be a partisan political issue either. Massachusetts deserves better.

We need your help! Call your legislator, tell them to support the Senate’s stem cell bill and to not let Governor Romney stifle this important research. Look Up My Legislator - http://www.vote-smart.org/

Call the State House now 617-722-2000 and ask for your legislator.

The Committee for a Better Commonwealth, organized by Chris Gabrieli and a group of families and business leaders, has launched a campaign to support lifesaving stem cell research. Watch the ads - http://www.bettercommonwealth.org/ads

We need your help to keep these ads on the air and to tell Governor Romney to save stem cell research.

Please, sign up for our email list - http://www.bettercommonwealth.org/ - and make a contribution - - to help keep the ads running.

Many leading Republicans here in Massachusetts and around the nation support this research. Nancy Reagan, former President Gerald Ford, and U.S. Senator Orin Hatch, from Utah have made this issue a priority.

In Massachusetts, a coalition of the major research universities, teaching hospitals and disease-specific patient advocacy groups has formed to support this effort. And the Massachusetts Legislative leadership has made passage of a bill supporting stem cell research a top priority.

We must continue this important research. We must continue to give the patients and their families who depend on medical research the hope and confidence we can find a cure. And we must stop Mitt Romney’s effort to steer Massachusetts in the wrong direction.

Sign up. Donate. Join this important effort. www.bettercommonwealth.com

Thank you for your support.

1. Dam right mitt's wrong!
He doesn't deserve to be called with the title of "governor". People don't seem to understand that stem cell research is necessary NOW.

2. Mitt Romney and his religion-into-law stance is AGAINST this . . .
.

Mitt Romney and his religion-into-law stance is AGAINST Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer also known as Therapeutic Cloning !!

Association of American Medical Colleges: Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (Therapeutic Cloning)

What is Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer or Therapeutic Cloning?

What is Reproductive Cloning?

"Cloning is the creation of multiple copies of a single molecule, cell, or virus. There are many different kinds of cloning, most of which are now commonplace in science. Cloning has allowed scientists to develop powerful new drugs and to produce insulin and useful bacteria in the lab. It also allows researchers to track the origins of biological weapons, catch criminals and free innocent people, and produce new plants and livestock to feed an undernourished world population.

"Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) or therapeutic cloning involves removing the nucleus of an unfertilized egg cell, replacing it with the material from the nucleus of a "somatic cell" (a skin, heart, or nerve cell, for example), and stimulating this cell to begin dividing. Once the cell begins dividing, stem cells can be extracted 5-6 days later and used for research. The AAMC supports on-going research into SCNT and has endorsed legislation that would allow such research to flourish.

"Reproductive cloning, on the other hand, is intended to create human beings by cloning human embryos. The AAMC and the National Academy of Sciences recommends a legally enforceable ban on all forms of this type of cloning."
