Jail compromise announced
This sounds like some middle ground has been found in the controversy over consolidating the county jail system with the state corrections system. Of course, anything can happen in the legislature. I'll admit I had strongly mixed emotions over the governor's original plan. Hopefully this achieves the same ends without the problems.

Jail compromise unveiled

By Kennebec Journal Staff report January 28, 2008 11:31 AM

AUGUSTA — State and county corrections officials announced a compromise on the jail consolidation issue today at a legislative public hearing.

The compromise — worked out over the weekend — would create a board of corrections that would oversee the operations of county jails and the state corrections system, said Waldo County Sheriff Scott Story.

In a presentation before the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee, Story and Department of Corrections Commissioner Martin Magnusson said they have agreed on a plan that seeks to unify the systems.

The proposal, which requires legislative consideration and approval, would not immediately close or downsize any county jails. Those working in the county corrections system would remain county workers, they said.

Lawmakers will hold work sessions on the plan starting Feb. 4.

1. As I read it..
this "compromise" silences the most vocal
critics by leaving their fiefdoms intact and
adds yet another (costly) layer of government.
Do I have it about right?
