Despair for Kansas' mentally ill
Kansans struggling to make sense of the world have new reason to despair.

A new report by the National Alliance on Mental Illness quantifies the decline in state government spending fin Kansas or mental health services during the past four years. The 12.4 percent reduction in appropriations by the Kasnas Legislature and Govs. Sam Brownback, Mark Parkinson and Kathleen Sebelius came to $14.3 million.

"We're leading the way to the bottom and putting our citizens at risk at a time when the need for mental health services is on the rise," said Rick Cagan, executive director of NAMI Kansas.

“The tragedy of this report is that Kansas is among a group of 10 states who have the deepest percentage reductions in mental health spending,” he said.
