Question re: Lee Jones & US Senate
Since Conroy won despite the fact he wasn't actively campaigning, and Mr. Jones was actually raising money and making an effort, will Jones still run as an independent? Or can Conroy "step down," and offer his spot up to Jones? Anyone know?

1. I doubt it.
I'm also in shock about Jones losing, but I have to point out that Jones waited until the last minute (two days before the deadline) to file, giving Conroy the opening to file himself. Most Democrats I know were totally unaware that any Democrat had filed for the Senate seat, let alone two. Even at the Second Saturday breakfast in Johnson County, the organizers didn't bother to tell that group to be sure to vote August 3rd because there actually was a Democratic primary to care about.

Conroy's name came first on the ballot, and since most voters around the state probably had not heard of him, that would account for Conroy's small but consist lead in most areas. But in Shawnee County, which includes Topeka, he got 80% of the vote. Why?

So now my November 2 dilemma will be do I vote for a nutcase who probably would be totally ineffective in office or a known evil? Or maybe not vote at all?

2. Interesting
I reminded as many people as I could that Jones was the only candidate who planned to run an active campaign against Brownback....obviously this didn't do much good. I think what happened, as i feared, is that voters really had no clue who either of these guys were, so they vote based soley on their names, (kind of like when a novice gambler goes to the dog track) and I suppose that 'Robert Conroy' looks more attractive on paper than 'Lee Jones.'

Do you know for sure that Conroy is a nutcase? He's got my vote as is. Wonder if there's any chance of getting him to mount an actual campaign?

**sighs**

3. I shouldn't be so hasty
to use words like nutcase. It reflects worse on me than on the other person.

Here's a bit of a Q&A with him from the Sun Newspapers back in June:

What is the most important issue in this race?*
Education. Specifically, the direction Washington's policies steer state and local education priorities. My incumbent opponent has demonstrated time and time again his disdain for the public education system in this country and his desire to dismantle and privatize it. Such a move would be disastrous for our nation's children.

*What makes you a better candidate than your opponent?*
Unlike my opponent, I will not forget nor ignore the people who will have sent me to the Senate. We may be one nation under God, but we are also a nation of thoughtful and reasonable people, and I take my charge from them. I answer to the higher authority in church.

What changes would you recommend in the way Social Security is
administered?*

Rumors of Social Security's demise are greatly exaggerated. It is not in the dire straits described by those wishing to
privatize it. Baby boomers will not bankrupt the system, and predictions of its demise are based on "doomsday" forecasts of the nation's economy continuing its downhill tumble. I have faith in our economy's resiliency, and I will vigorously resist any attempts to privatize Social Security, reduce benefits or increase the eligibility age. Moreover, I will work to phase in a removal of the earnings cap subject to Social Security tax, and make all income, not merely wages, subject to Social Security tax. It isn't fair that a worker bringing home $35,000 per year pays Social
Security taxes on his entire income, while an investor who earns $500,000 from dividends pays nothing beyond the first $87,900. I would also work to relieve the burden on lower income workers by eliminating the first few thousand dollars in income from taxation while still counting that income in calculations for benefits.

What changes in economic policy are needed?*
The Bush administration has marketed tax cuts like a snake oil salesman peddles patent medicine. It is not a cure-all for the economy, especially in an era when federal education mandates are either underfunded or not funded at all, when social services are cut and war spending is in the billions. Congress needs to have the collective sense to say no to wanton, irresponsible tax cuts for the nation's wealthiest income bracket as well as tax breaks to multinational corporations, especially when they outsource the jobs of our nation's work force. By the same token, Congress needs
to give targeted tax relief to the middle and lower classes. For the vast majority of Americans the burdens of increased health insurance coverage and other taxes can be somewhat offset by the recent tax cuts. But those cuts are far from the panacea touted by the Bush administration.

*What is your stance on the conflict in **Iraq**?*
The Bush administration has handled the Iraq war in a disastrous way. Not willing to let the facts get in the way of a
good fable, the administration either ignored or lied about intelligence to justify our invasion. My incumbent opponent was all too eager to promote such a disastrous move and to champion a corrupt and traitorous replacement for Saddam Hussein on Capitol Hill. His judgment, as well as the White House's, must be questioned and placed into doubt from the beginning. Moreover, our forces, our sons and daughters, were sent into harm's way with neither a clear plan for victory nor an exit strategy. In the ensuing power vacuum, Iraq's now-porous borders allowed al-Qaida terrorists to come in where previously they never were, allowing them to foment dissent and encourage uprisings. As a result, we could be mired in Iraq for years. We need to re-engage the international community, especially those of our traditional allies that we spurned, in a way the current administration is unwilling to do. Bringing those nations into the equation will finally lend an air of legitimacy to this heretofore misguided venture. A larger coalition will also place a smaller burden on our own forces, thereby allowing them either to come home or to be concentrated in genuine known hotbeds of terrorism, such as Afghanistan.

4. Those are Conroy's quotes?
Sounds like good stuff to me. Do you think there's any chance he'll run a real campaign now? I was thinking of maybe making some custom bumper stickers on one of those websites. Do you happen to have his contact information?

5. He has no website.
He has no intention of campaigning. Apparently he only filed towards the end of the filing season when no one else had shown up to replace Joan Ruff.

Some people have wondered how he could afford the filing fee (I think it's $1500) since he's retired. They seem to think that some evil entity was behind him. Personally, I don't find it at all improbably that someone could be retired and have a decent enough income to afford the fee.

What is so sad is that even though Lee actually did some campaigning, few enough people were aware of him that Conroy beat him with even less campaigning. I don't believe Jones ran a single ad anywhere. The Kansas City Star made absolutely no note of the fact that he was running.

Someone has posted on his website that maybe he could run as a third party candidate, but that strikes me as totally hopeless. He'd only raised $18,000, which is nothing.

The real shame is that Lee is a very nice guy and deserves better.

6. Yeah I liked what I'd seen so far re: Lee
And I know that Conroy never had any intentions of campaigning. I just thought perhaps now, that he actually won a "contested" primary he might give at least a minimal effort. If he's going to be on the ballot we might as well try to get people to vote for him. i agree with you in that it's not that outrageous that Conroy was able to afford the fee either. He's a retired railroad worker and there is money to be made in the field.

Hell if he can win without even campaigning, imagine what he could pull off if he really tried! ;-)

7. They use Diebold machines there.
The conspiracy nut in me says maybe they used that race to see how they can use Diebold to steal votes. Since neither candidate stand much chance against Brownback, they figured what the hell... let's screw with the race for practice.

8. Lee Jones:actively campaigning
Lee is now trying his best to at least get the word out that there is an alternative to Brownback.

Over the past several months, Lee Jones has been campaigning tirelessly and working for exposure. He is literally traveling far and wide across the state in order to promote his message and expose Brownback on the issues.

Email me at cammyc @ jonesforsenate.us if you have time to help with the campaign in any capacity and let me know what that might be. Brownback is so awful, the more people who are at least informed about what he is doing and how he is representing our state, the better. If you know of a large event that Lee should be at, email me about that as well.

This US Senate seat is so powerful, the race is just not getting much attention from anyone as they've really written it off as a win for Brownback. But if people knew the truth, i think they would really see things differently.

10. Jones should come to western Kansas
Hi, might I suggest that Lee Jones make at least one stop out here in western Kansas? Ellis County is a strong Democratic stronghold, and there could be some media coverage. Lee should contact Glen Staab, Ellis County Dem chair.

11. Lee Jones came to Hays!
Props to Lee Jones, who came out to western Kansas and spoke to my classes today at the university. The students loved him. Good luck to Lee next week!
