Braley's opponent - Is this guy for real???
http://www.wcfcourier.com/articles/2008/07/12/news/poli...

<snip>

He said "radical environmentalists" have helped worsen the nation's energy crunch by opposing an expansion of oil drilling, new refineries and the pursuit of nuclear energy. Hartsuch said he supports the construction of new coal power plants, including those proposed in Marshalltown and Waterloo.

<snip>

Unlike Braley, he said, he does not fault oil companies for making record profits. He argued profit drives capital investment and helps create more energy. "I don't buy the argument of record profits. It shows a complete lack of regard or confidence in free enterprise," he said.

Hartsuch, who has raised $16,655 through the end of June, trails Braley in fundraising by a significant margin. Through mid-May, Braley has raised $640,129.

1. Hartsuch will be lucky to get 25 pct.
Seriously. He beat out Maggie Tinsman in the republican primary last time because Tinsman actually (gasp!) made sense on abortion and gay rights. The rich folks in Bettendorf couldn't deal with her brand of moderate republicanism and voted in Hartsuch. The woman who ran against him was a librarian or a school teacher or something like that, got in the race late, and as I recall, gathered more votes than expected. Hartsuch has no chance whatsoever. He may carry Bettendorf and nowhere else. He may not even carry Bettendorf. People are waking up, even out there. $4.00/gal gas and kids getting killed in Iraq will do that.

7. What's kind of scary
is that he's a fairly well known physician around here. From what I've heard, he's pretty good at what he does. So maybe he should just stick with doctoring and get out of politics.

8. Raising $16,000 in the last reporting period makes me think the GOP
kissed his butt and told him they'd 'help' and then, when they got him to put his name on the ballot, dumped him. Braley is out there working for the seat.
