IC family that was killed
It turns out the wife, Sheryl, was in my high school class. I didn't know her married name and haven't seen her in years. But now I'm sad all over again. She was always really nice. How tragic for the families!

1. The Sueppel family is well known in Iowa City
They have quite an extended family in this area. This is such a tragic loss for the families and the community.

2. Various branches of my family have been intertwined with Sueppels
as long as I can remember. Nephews were in classes with some. My father was coached by Francis who is probably the great grandfather of the current middle aged crop.
I am in shock and just really feel so sad for all involved. So sad for the children and of course the whole clan on both sides. There is probably a lot of 'what ifs' going on tonight.
I don't know how or if Rob Sueppel (Dave's aide) is related. Just spoke with him the other day.
Pardon me for a dopey post. Lots of thoughts jumping in my mind.

5. re:various branches of my family...
Rob Sueppel would have been Steven's brother. I had gone to school with both of them.

6. Westboro Baptist Church plans to picket funerals - DISGUSTING!!!!
:grr: :grr: :grr:

HASN'T THIS FAMILY BEEN THROUGH ENOUGH???

A well-known church that protests against gays plans to picket the funeral of the six deceased members of the Sueppel family.

The Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., announced in a news release that it plans to picket the Sueppels' funeral Saturday, claiming "God sent the shooter" as punishment for Iowa's sins.

Sgt. Troy Kelsay of the Iowa City Police Department said he thinks the group is attracted to the event because of Iowa City's "liberal stance" toward homosexuals and the media attention surrounding the Sueppel deaths.

The best response is to ignore the group, Kelsay said.

8. Apparently they can't read
The Westboro people I mean. There was no shooter. He beat them all with a bat or something.
Sgt. Kelsay was likely right when he said to just ignore them, but man oh man it would be tempting to kick their asses all over Iowa City.

9. Kelsay would be right.
They want attention. They crave attention. The best move would be to not give them attention. The Phelps clan's next move would be to a) retreat in defeat, or b) do something more extreme, let their anger get the best of them, and watch them do something which crosses legal boundaries, stopping them in their tracks.

Please, everyone in IC, DON'T GIVE THEM ATTENTION.

as some other states have done.
