Indiana’s poor and minority children continue to fall behind their wealthier white counterparts despite a web of school reform efforts, a new Indiana University study shows.

Shrinking the gap should be the top education priority for the governor, state education officials, business leaders and other key leaders, according to IU’s Center for Evaluation and Education Policy.

Researchers offered several suggestions to shrink the achievement gap, including all-day kindergarten for some children, better teachers in urban schools and higher expectations for the most disadvantaged children.

“Now we must move beyond problem identification to problem resolution,” said Terry Spradlin, the IU center’s associate director. “We are calling on the governor, the state superintendent, the state board of education and the Education Roundtable to come together and work together to make this Indiana’s No. 1 education priority.”
