Keyes lashes out at Cheney's daughter

here's how the the Sun Times is reporting
September 1, 2004

BY ABDON M. PALLASCH STAFF WRITER

NEW YORK—Illinois GOP chairwoman Judy Baar Topinka said today that her party’s nominee for the U.S. Senate, Alan Keyes, should apologize for what she called his “idiotic” statement that vice presidential daughter Mary Cheney and all homosexuals, are “selfish hedonists.”

But Keyes refused to back down today, saying he was merely stating what he believes is the truth, as he would to his own daughter if she engaged in lesbian acts.

“If my own daughter were a homosexual or lesbian, I would love my daughter, but I would tell her she was in sin,” Keyes said.
In an interview with CNN, Mary Cheney responded to Keyes’ remarks by saying, “I’m not going to dignify it with a comment.”

In Chicago, Mayor Daley also said this morning that Keyes ought to apologize.

3. The real sin
is that we still have too many ignorant, close-minded hateful individuals in this country.

If Keyes wins more than 20% of the vote, I would really question the integrity of the people of Illinois.

Sorry to all the good ones in Ill. but that's just how I feel.

13. I have no idea what the percentage will be in the end...

but I just found out today that my parents, who are lifelong Republicans (Dad's more of a Libertarian), are voting for Obama because they think Keyes is an absolute nutjob. My mother calls him "the preacher."

This is completely anecdotal, and my parents are only two people out of how many voters, but they don't like *libruls* very much so I think it says a lot. They are completely at a loss over why the IL GOP made such a stupid choice for a candidate.

9. he's still in NY embarrassing the hell out of IL GOP delegation
and blabbing continues. He has been alienating so many people, he must know he has lost the IL Senate race. But every time he opens his mouth he gets attention, I think he likes being controversial, money keeps pouring in from the biblebeaters and something tells me maybe he wants his own radio or TV show again. Watching Jim Thompson and Edgar on the 10pm news tonight was pretty funny. If you didn't see it Thompson basically said he wouldn't vote for Keyes and Edgar was sort of speechless, saying he'd vote for the "best man." Obama, right?

I wonder how much Cheney is gunning for him.

12. he left NYC for Chicago 9/2
to be at the Hilton this evening for a speech writer's deal. Per a Chicago Tribune article where Jim Thompson said he won't be voting for Keyes.

11. Obama was interviewed
Edited on Thu Sep-02-04 03:55 PM by sandraj
on the radio this morning and asked about Keyes' extreme views. I will never be able to do justice to Obama's answer, but paraphrasing... he talked about how his opponent believes that the role of government is to eradicate sin; basically to hit people over the head with religion. Obama said that he himself is a Christian, but the way he expresses his faith is by using his role in government to help people with the bread and butter issues. He doesn't believe that religion and government should be enmeshed, which in my opinion is the view most rational people hold whether they're religious or not.

14. And that is why I love Barack Obama...
But anyway, back to Keyes... I gotta say I'm gloating a wee bit about this. I think the IL GOP knew they were going to lose no matter who they put against Obama, so they thought they'd make some points by bringing in Keyes. "See how inclusive we are? We've got a black candidate!" They figured they wouldn't have to worry about him in the long run because he wouldn't win. But the part I don't think the GOP considered (and what has me filled with glee) is that Keyes is such a nut-job that he's brought the poll numbers down for all Repub races in Illinois. And after his absurd comments about gays and refusal to back down or apologize, I dare say he's helping make the whole damn party look bad. Insert a big ole Nelson "HA-ha!" right about now.

16. No, he hasn't bothered
For one thing, his trips to outer space have been more time consuming than the initially thought. He didn't even have time to meet and greet the GOP delagates over breakfast in NYNY.

Secondly, his anti-psychotics were lost in some luggage on the way back. It took a good week or so, before they got that balance of blood levels and the drug cocktail just right.

Keyes is the best thing that ever happened to the Democrats. But, Why ISN"T THE KERRY CAMPAIGN TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THIS?

17. And this surprises anyone?
Any person who was watching the 2000 debates against the GOP candidates in the Republican primaries should have been able to detect that Keyes was the farthest to the right, socially. Even moreso than Gary Bauer (although not by much).

If I was Mary Cheney, I'd be publicly telling Keyes to "Kiss my derriere!"
