Pentagon says "no" to flyover for God and Country Family Festival
10:52 PM MDT on Friday, July 3, 2009

Ysabel Bilbao/KTVB

NAMPA -- More than four decades of tradition were changed this year at the God and Country Family Festival in Nampa.

Typically, a military flyover is a highlight of the event, but this year it did not happen.

To make a fly over happen you have to get permission from the Pentagon.

It hasn't been a problem in the past but this year it was --all because of the word "God."

1. Hope & Change?
Really though, it seems like it doesn't take much for a Flyover.

One happened here on the 4th.

Part of me wants to say it was the previous decades old way of allowing Flyovers was wrong.
But, WTF? For Generations this festival had Flyovers by the US Military.
Traditions are important. Faith is important.

What do you think about this IDemo?

2. I didn't know this happened, but it doesn't really matter what with all of the jet traffic in Boise
That may have been the reason for the "no flyover" decision in Nampa.
Nampa is only 20 miles from Boise, about 2 minutes air time in a jet.

The country of Singapore has some pilots training here in Boise and the state of Oregon has some of their men from the Oregon National Air Guard training here this summer, as well.
And then of course, our own Idaho Air National Guard unit is also training, so there are military jets flyng every single day here nowadays.

Oregon's base in Klamath Falls is undergoing a major rebuild, they are repaving their airstrips, so their Air Guard unit is over here for 6 months to fly in Southern Idaho out of the Gowen Base airfield, located at Boise's airport.
I haven't seen so many F-15s in the last decade.
We used to have F-15s and F-16s stationed here that flew out of Boise all of the time, but they were transferred in the late 90s to other bases, so all we have stationed here now are A-10 Warthogs.
