Incumbent Ginny Brown-Waite refused to debate in 2008 as the economy and her positions turned sour heading into the November election. John Russell pounded her in several meetings in 2006. While Russell predicted a coming recession incumbent Ginny Brown-Waite clearly stated that the economy was just fine and ALL of her constituents were doing well financially (at least the ones that she hung out with ,that gave her checks etc.) :)

Newspapers like the Tampa Tribune and The St. Petersburg Times took great pains to protect incumbency casting aside any notion that competence should be a qualification to hold office. Both papers endorsed ALL incumbents from all Tampa Bay area congressional districts in 2008. Local public television station WEDU was equally corrupt in disallowing meaningful discourse between or from challengers and incumbents.
