Levin quitting Walgreen, weighing run for governor
By ANDREW TANGEL and GARY HABER, The News Journal
Posted Friday, June 15, 2007

Alan B. Levin is assessing his chances with veteran Republican Party leaders.

Alan B. Levin said Thursday he will step down next month as chairman of Walgreen Co.'s Happy Harry's drugstore subsidiary, feeding speculation he might run for governor.

Levin signed a three-year contract with Walgreen when the company bought the Happy Harry's chain that the Levin family built up in Delaware.

He said his early departure was not related to his consideration of a gubernatorial campaign that could pit him against one of the state's top two Democratic vote-getters: Treasurer Jack Markell or Lt. Gov. John C. Carney Jr.

"One had nothing to do with the other," Levin, 52, of Montchanin, said Thursday, adding that a decision on whether to run includes an assessment of his chances.

"I think it's tough to make that assessment early on," Levin said. "But you don't get into this unless you believe you can win the race."

Delaware political observers said Levin, who headed his family's drugstore chain before selling it to Walgreen last year, would be a good candidate. Some consider him to be the Republican Party's best chance to regain the governor's mansion after more than a decade of Democratic control.

1. I wonder how much he had to do with Harry's success, too
Is he at all qualified to be governor?

2. Was Bush

It's the republican party - a party that honestly believed that Lynn Swann's popularity as an great football player for the Pittsburgh Steelers could actually have him defeat an incumbant and popular democratic governor. Hell it's the same party that thought Joe Paterno's slacker kid could actually defeat a popuular moderate democrat in a district that leans slightly repuke.

Sometimes I think qualification to run in the Republican party is a pulse

3. "a pulse"
and popularity with the public.

Harry fits both and while his expansion of his father's business was admirable, his sellout to Walgreens - already showing itself as inferior in products and service, was not.

If he runs, it's simply because he's a well recognized name here with a good for business track record.

Let's hope Delawareans are smarter than that. But Minner appears to be losing fans.

4. I hate the new Happy Harry Bags - they're so cheap
The old ones you could reuse over and over again
