Bruce McPherson Confirmed as Secretary of State (Unanimously)
Mar 30, 2005 1:58 pm US/Pacific

(AP) Without opposition, the state Assembly confirmed former state Sen. Bruce A. McPherson as California's 29th secretary of state Wednesday, and he was to be sworn in shortly afterward.

McPherson, a Santa Cruz Republican nominated by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to replace former Secretary of State Kevin Shelley, won a 71-0 vote shortly after the Assembly Rules Committee voted 7-1 for his nomination.

He was to be sworn in at 3 p.m. in the secretary of state's office near the Capitol.

"Now is the day we begin to rebuild the secretary of state's office. Now is the day we begin to bring the trust back," said Assembly Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield.

5. I believe Mervyn Dymally is a man....
Also is it possible that he abstained? I think the assembly has 80 members.

6. Zoinks! He certainly is a man!

:dunce:

But whether or not he abstained, he certainly did not vote no in the Assembly. Nor did any of HIS colleagues.

7. What he told me:
I called to thank Dymally for his vote today, and his staffer wanted me to thank him directly. Dymally told me that this is the very first time that he’s been leaned on by a speaker to not vote no, “to not raise the issue” on the floor of the Assembly. He said that no Dems want to take Arnold on. They’re fearful of him. Dymally said next time he won’t listen to the speaker. He said that the others will regret their votes.

I reminded him that Barbara Lee was the lone voice in the Congress after 9/11, but then in October 2002, other members in the House and Senate joined her. I reminded him that Barbara Boxer was the lone voice in January 2005 – and that she would have voted to reject the electoral vote count in 2000, but Gore had asked her not to.

... It's a sad day for California.

9. Thank you so much for this.
Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 10:56 PM by Ojai Person
I will call him too. I tuned in too late to hear what he said, if anything, to explain his vote. I think at the end right before the voting, he said that he wanted to suggest some alternative members for the transition team, but I guess no one wanted to hear it--I should say, they said wait until after the vote, then the meeting was dismissed.

11. Reminds me of what Arnold said before the Recall Election --
That the sexual harassment charges against him would be addressed AFTER the election. Then after the election, he said that the charges were “old news.” When pressed on the topic, he eventually said that he’d have them investigated, but instead did nothing.

10. Everyone should call their ass member and ask them why they folded
I was surprised they folded so easily since they could have at least embarassed Arnold and made it an issue.

16. So did Lori Saldana
and two others who I'm forgetting
Lori Saldana was a member of DFA inspired by Howard Dean to run. She ran a grassroots campaign, did not get money or support from the State party, and consequentially is not beholden to the Dem leaders.

19. Yes. Lori Saldana, Jackie Goldberg, and Paul Koretz.
They all stayed in their offices so they didn't have to vote and defy the request of the Speaker, as JYD reported:

All three stayed in their offices and refused to go to the Assembly and vote
The pressure was so intense from Nunez that they could not vote no on the floor
We went to each of their offices to thank them
Each and every one of them is/are a really great person with a ton of integrity
We told Paul Koretz that he's got a fan club
Lori Saldana took Marci and Sarah into her office and closed the Door
and talked to them for a long time.
You got no idea how great these people are

Might I suggest we all wear black armbands, or black and orange ribbons to signify loss of our votes?

20. not pure, but potentially reachable
Republicans have about one and a half constituencies:

Big business and the religious right

Democrats theoretically must answer to those of us who pay union dues that are given to them in campaign contributions and similar groups.

They did us.

The republicans don't.

If this McPherson gets pushed by not just Arnold but Karl Rove and Bush, who is he going to listen to his conscience and us, or the big dogs?

22. List we gave to Assemblyman Coto
The following list are names which our group submitted to Assemblyman Coto after he contacted Marcy of PDLA.
At the bottom of the list, is Coto's reply.
In it, he has listed 14 OTHER Assembly members who want to be included in our group's E-mailing notices, add to that list the 4 Assembly People who refused to go to the Assembly to vote on McPherson, there is a total of 19 Assembly persons concerned about Election Protection Issues. Not bad for a 7 day campaign (including Easter Weekend)

- Prof. Dill, Stanford University, Founder Verified Voting Foundation.

- Prof. Arthur Keller, UC Santa Cruz, Founder Open Voting Consortium,
an expert in data base systems and computer security.

- Jim March, BlackBoxVoting.org.

- Hal Pomeranz, Deer Run Associates, http://deer-run.com, and
faculty member of the SANS institute, http://sans.org (used to
live in Oakland, may have moved)..

- Prof. Matt Bishop, UC Davis, Department of Computer Science,
co-director of the Computer Security Laboratory.

- Bob Ono, UC Davis Information Technology Security Coordinator
PDA - Alysia) Here are my recommendations, they'reboth from The Ballot Integrity Project and Vote Trust USA,and work closely with Andy Stephenson and others. They can't be seen as partisan, because they work with EVERYBODY (Including the Christian Coalitionin Georgia!),and they are really THE people I trust on this:

Joan Krawitz
Executive Director
[email protected]
PH: 847-869-5025
C: 847-962-5290

Warren Stewart
Director of Legislative Issues and Policy
[email protected]
C: 510-867-6509 (CA!)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sam Paz would be a great lawyer to suggest. He wasnominated to be a Federal Judge under Clinton, but never got past the republicans. Another potential lawyer
would be Mario Vazquez.

Antonia Hernandez (GC of MALDEF, I believe has litigatedvoting rights
cases) 213 629-2512; maybe someone else from MALDEF; I see one Denise
Hulett listed on a case against City of Santa Maria

Steve Reyes, Mexican American Legal Defense and EducationFund (MALDEF

Connie Rice (civil rights lawyer) 213 989-1303

Fred Woocher (Santa Monica lawyerrepresents candidates in voters'
rights cases like that surfer woman in San Diego)310 576-1233

Someone from Remcho, Johansen & Purcell (this firm is the Dem
equivalent of the Merksamer people) 916 264-1818

Pamela Susan Karlan (Stanford Law Prof, apparently worked on some
voting rights cases including the Watsonville one, great cv:
http://www.law.stanford.edu/faculty/karlan/karlan-cv.pd...
650 725-4851

Douglas E. Mirell (constitutional and sometime do-gooder lawyer, with
Loeb & Loeb <310 282-2151>

Mark D. Rosenbaum, Paul L. Hoffman (ACLU) 213 977-9500

Either Mark or Paul would be a great presence, great lawyers, but maybe
a hard sell (and who knows if they'd want to do it, which is true for
all of the above. . .)
I understand that you are looking for recommendations forthe Secretary
of State's transition team, especially people of color.

I would recommend Paul Turner of the Greenlining Institute; he seems
very knowledgable on election issues, especially pertaining to the
representation of minorities.

He can be reached at [email protected] . The Greenlining
Institute's web site is www.greenlining.org . Paul is Senior Program
Manager of their Claiming Our Democracy project, which is described
at http://www.greenlining.org/program/democracy/index.php .

Another person I'd recommend is Goro Mitchell, Executive Director of
the Community Development Institute in East Palo Alto. He can be
reached at [email protected] and their web site is www.cdi-usa.org .
Goro's bio is at http://www.cdi-usa.org/staffbios/goro.htm .
