Angelides launches campaign to unseat popular governor
By Beth Fouhy, AP Political Writer

State Treasurer Phil Angelides launched his campaign to unseat Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday, saying he would challenge the popular governor because he could not "stand by and watch the promise of California wither away."

Appearing on stage with his wife, parents and three daughters, Angelides announced his candidacy before a cheering crowd at the San Francisco elementary school his father attended as a child. He later headed to Sacramento and Los Angeles on the first day of a multi-city statewide tour.

As the first Democrat to declare his candidacy formally, Angelides acknowledged the steep odds he faced in taking on the world famous and charismatic Schwarzenegger. While the Republican governor's once-stratospheric ratings have dropped in recent months, he remains popular in the Democrat-leaning state.

"I have no illusions about the difficulty of this race. ... A relatively unknown public servant looking to take on a global action hero, an international celebrity," Angelides said, suggesting Schwarzenegger's fame and wealth had fueled an indifference to the needs of the state's most vulnerable citizens.

2. Angelides is a tough and honest man. A workhorse, not a showhorse.

I will do whatever I can to support him, even from here on the east coast.

Anyone know if Arnold's groping case is going through in England?

4. Sarbanes told me that
Angelides is a good man. I really liked Sarbanes & I hope he was right about Angelides because I live in California now.

I was kinda hoping that Tom Hanks would run against Arnold though.
