State Treasurer Phil Angelides launched his campaign to unseat Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday, saying he would challenge the popular governor because he could not "stand by and watch the promise of California wither away."
Appearing on stage with his wife, parents and three daughters, Angelides announced his candidacy before a cheering crowd at the San Francisco elementary school his father attended as a child. He later headed to Sacramento and Los Angeles on the first day of a multi-city statewide tour.
As the first Democrat to declare his candidacy formally, Angelides acknowledged the steep odds he faced in taking on the world famous and charismatic Schwarzenegger.
