Assemblywoman Mary Salas asked late Monday for a recount in the primary race for State Senate, two days after the results showed she lost by 22 votes.

The recount to determine the winner of the Democratic nominee to the 40th Senate seat will begin Monday and take about three days, according to the Riverside County Executive Office.

Salas will pay for the cost of the recount, but neither her campaign manager nor a county spokesman had an estimate Monday for how much that would cost.

“When you’re dealing with a number of votes that’s small, it’s well within the margin of error, and the people of the 40th Senate district deserve the right to make sure their votes were counted correctly,” said Barry Klein, campaign spokesman for Salas.
