1. Hi Trish -- check over in GD and the lounge
Edited on Sat Dec-31-05 04:14 PM by Gormy Cuss
there's been a lot of reports from all over the bay.
Sorry about your fence. The worst thing we've had happen was an awful lot of new "ponds" forming in the yard.

On edit: many in the Sacto, Mendocino and Redding contingents haven't checked in this morning.

2. Northeastern Sacramento County
My area is on higher ground and away from any creeks/streams, so we're very happy and dry. The fences are still standing despite the nasty winds we had earlier. Areas of Roseville, just a few miles away, had some flooding. Downtown Sacto had some street flooding, but it was taken care of. Let's see what the next weather front brings.

3. Lake Co. -ok
We have had lots of rain, mud slides and power outages. But so far there is still room in the lake for more water and no "serious" flooding. Our high water day is expected to be Monday, so we shall see. Hubby did not get his dialysis today because the power went out in Lakeport right before they put him on the machine. Otherwise we are all right.

The lake is really brown from all the muddy water pouring into it. It had some pretty big waves today and all the crazy fishermen seem to have stayed home. Not too many people on the roads, either.

My thoughts are with you. It looks as though we will get hit Monday with heavy rain and wind here in OC but shouldn't be as severe as you have had.

PM me if you need anything.:grouphug:

9. Lots of small floods because of clogged storm drains
Edited on Sun Jan-01-06 11:38 AM by Gormy Cuss
In Central Contra Costa (same area as Trish.) Also localized flooding from small creeks. The private lake overflowed in the Lakewood area of Walnut Creek, flooding some homes near downtown. There was also a mudslide on I-680 in Alamo.

A cul-de-sac in my neighborhood flooded because of storm drains and there are many branches down but otherwise our area was fine. We did get a ridiculous amount of rain rather quickly --4 inches or so according to my backyard rain gauge.

10. I got flooded out! (Russian River)
The bad news is that there is approx 5 feet of water in what used to be our apartment. We left about noon yesterday, just as the river was about to come up through the floor.

The good news is that I saw it coming. Even though my neighbors, and some old time river rats were telling me not to worry too much, I rented a cargo van on Tuesday, and spent four days packing and loading, and getting all of our stuff into a storage locker twenty miles away on high ground. By thursday some neighbors were chuckling as we loaded our crap up the steps to the truck. By saturday morning, they weren't laughing anymore, but were playing catch-up, and frantically scrambling to get their possessions to high ground.

Last night we enjoyed a wild new year's eve party in Marin county, and I've just woke up to the reality of being without a place to live.

Guess I'll call FEMA (Bwahahahaha!)

13. Sonoma County/Marin Update
Hi everybody! We live in Sonoma County in Santa Rosa (right near you, Trouble in Winter, so if you see this, PM me we'd love to chat.)

The major rain seems to be over. A few showers will follow in the next day or so. It's not the worst we've ever seen here, but it was a nasty mess.

To the very best of my knowledge there were no fatalities in the area. We had a second storm today and the major freeways in the North bay have been closed in places. Hwy 12 and 29 will not be open for a while. I'll check the CHP report in a few and repost then.

Here are some photos of what San Anselmo looks like (very near Pachamama).

http://www.marinij.com

I am sure she is fine, and just hope she didn't get arrested for stealing those rice krispy treats

Guerneville is under water, and NancyG I am sure is unable to leave her home, but she said she was out of the flood plain and I am sure she is fine as well. Possibly without power. I'll try to check that. People in that area know floods, and it's usually pretty well defined who will flood and who will not.

Oh and we drove by Petaluma about 3 PM Saturday and it was already flooded -- I am guessing that even though it did not make the news -- it's a big muddy mess in areas.

Let's just hope it all drains quickly so my clients (mostly wineries) don't lose any vines.

Thanks for everyone's concerns. I'll post more in a bit and let's keep this kicked so when Pacha and Nancy come back they'll see it.

14. no power for over 2 days
just came back on here in the northern part of the state. They don't give a damn about people living in rural areas. Priority has always been to get the power back to the rich people first. I'm sure Ahnuld didn't lose all of his food and I'm sure he wasn't laying in bed with 3 sets of clothes on and 5 blankets on him to keep from freezing to death.

Trees down all over the place. Damage is extensive.

Why didn't the the gropenfuhrer declare California to be in a state of emergency I ask?

Totally sucks - was watching those 85 mph winds tear the roof off of one of the older homes around here that hasn't been maintained.

shit, that is all I can say, shit. I am ok but I just had to have my dog put down on the 29th. Thanks a lot cancer, how I hate cancer and what it does to so many living creatures. :( :( :( :( :(

Happy 2006? Yeah right.

26. me too!
We got the power back yesterday but I almost lost all of my food too. I was able to salvage the stuff in my oversized freezer it seems (well I ate some of the food last night and I am here today so I guess it is ok).

I used to live further north and we were out once for 2 weeks. Thank god I'm not living there anymore!

Ice? Where? I couldn't even find a store open. :(

16. still without power in Blue Lake....
Finally got power at the university, in Arcata. I'm desperately looking for dry ice to save the contents of my chest freezer-- the only place in town that I know of that sells it is not open today. AARRGGHH! There's hundreds of dollars worth of food in there. I'm waiting for one of the department staff members to meet me here and and see how much CO2 we have in the tanks and how much dry ice we can make.

Talked to a PG&E rep this AM-- he said that Blue Lake, Trinidad, and Willow Creek will likely be out at least another 24 hours. My power went out on Friday night, so this is getting REALLY tiresome.

19. San Diego here -
Wind gusts up to around 25 - 30 MPH here in North Park; 30-40MPH around our old place in Lakeside. Here in the city, there's no real street flooding, but in the East County and North County, they do have flash flood and slide alerts.
Surf is high along the coast - they closed the Ocean Beach pier (a good 40 ft above "sea level" for the most part) last night due to waves coming up onto the low part of the walkway and damaging railing during the high tides.

Luckily, we didn't have any real major fire damage in the county this year around the housing areas so we shouldn't lose houses in slides.

The first storm missed us for the most part; this second one looks to be a bit nasty.

Good luck to everyone north of us.

Haele

22. Back edge of my property is underwater
I live on a few acres above the Stanislaus River, which thankfully never approached flood stage. It did rise in its channel, flooding the park and about a half acre along the back edge of my property, but other than some wet trees and fenceposts, there's no damage. My neighbors backyard rifle range is being washed away though :)

Several of my neighbors are having a problem at the moment though. Decades and decades ago a small seasonal stream that used to run through here was channeled, narrowed, and turned into a drainage ditch to take surface water away from here into the river. There's been so much water that it's done its best to reclaim its old banks...which bisect several properties. One of my neighbors had two feet of water in his garage at one point, and most of us were out there sandbagging to help them out this weekend. Luckily, it appears to be over now, and both the "creek" and river are dropping by the hour (the "creek" has almost entirely vanished again at this point).

23. Governor declares state of emergency in 7 counties
Monday, January 2, 2006

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in seven Northern California counties Monday afternoon, opening the way for increased state help in the areas hit hardest by the holiday weekend storms.

In the proclamation, the governor said that "conditions of extreme peril to the safety of persons and property" exist in Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Napa, Sacramento, Sonoma and Trinity counties. The declaration was requested by the battered counties, which are struggling to deal with the flooding, mudslides and road damage caused by the storms.

While the counties have declared local emergencies, "the magnitude of this disaster exceeds the capabilities of the services, personnel, equipment and facilities of these counties,'' Schwarzenegger said in his emergency declaration. The state action also opens the way for possible federal disaster help for the area.

Schwarzenegger was scheduled to visit the city of Napa Monday afternoon for a briefing on the problems there and a tour of some of the city's hardest hit areas.
